Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Camilla Parker-Bowles

    Jackie-Kennedy — 18 years ago(September 17, 2007 06:47 AM)

Ok I am going to through myself to wolves here and try to defend Camilla because I cannot believe the amount of disrespectful threads about her.
Before that can I say that I am a fan Princess Diana and she has always been and will always be an inspiration to me.
However I think we have to look at the bigger picture here before we going judging those involved.
Charles and Camilla's relationship began long before Diana was even in the picture, as far back as the 70s before either was married. So it wasn't as if they started out having an affair. it was in fact a perfectly aceptable relationship. However for whatever reason Camilla simply was considered Princess material ( not virginal enough I think) and she had also fallen in love with Andrew Parker Bowles so for the time marriage was out the question.
Charles had been raised by parents of a generation that demanded certain things out of their children and believed in chosing the potential spouse particularly in the case of the first born and this was even more apparent because he is the Heir to the throne. The Royals have different ways of doing things and I don't think it would ever have occurred to Charles to argue with his parents even if he was a grown man because he was raised to respect their wishes.
Diana on the other hand was a dreamer and and an overly romantic view of what her life as a Princess would be like. She imagined a fairytale with Prince Charming riding in on white horse and carrying her away to live happily ever after.
But real life isn't like that. unfortunatly Diana was too young and too uneducated ( by English Upper Class standards) to fully understand what she was getting into when she married the 32 year old but older than his years and very set in his ways Prince of Wales. She made the all too common mistake of think he would change for her but that rarely happens.
Many close friends and confidantes have said that at the beginning the couple were very much love but unfortunatly Charles's stubborness and his being set inhis coupled with Diana's neediness and high expectations meant the marriage was doomed to failure and I honestly think he only went back to Camilla when he believed the marriage unsalvagable.
And lets not forget that Diana too had numerous affairs again when she felt that the marriage was effectively over. So it's as though Charles and Camilla were the only gulity party in all this. There was also Di-and-James, Di-and-Oliver, Di-and-James-Gilbey but to name a few.
I dont' condone affairs but I can understand why both felt the need to have them. After all we all need to feel loved and wanted and sadly neither could give the other what they needed.
Camilla too tried to work at her marriage and even has children but she and Charles were just too connected to be apart.
I honestly think all this Camilla-bashing is really unnecessary because if you look at the bigger picture you realise that she's not the only guilty party and she is a victim of Diana's insecurity and Charles's not being willing and/or able to stand up to his parents.
She deserves better than the shallow and really cruel comments I've read on this thread.

REF: She (Diana) made the all too common mistake of think he would change for her but that rarely happens.
ANS: Did she want him to change or did she just have problems adjusting to this very different lifestyle?
REF: And lets not forget that Diana too had numerous affairs again when she felt that the marriage was effectively over.
ANS: Yes, she did, but, what was she supposed to do after Charles abandoned her bed?
REF: if you look at the bigger picture you realise that she's (Camilla) not the only guilty party and she is a victim of Diana's insecurity and Charles's not being willing and/or able to stand up to his parents.
ANS: Why do you think Diana was insecure?
I agree the marriage was a horrible mismatch. Charles should have been allowed to marry whomever he wanted and Diana, hopefully, would have found her Mr. Right.

            mhansen2,
In most of the books I have read about Diana, the majority of people describe her as being needy, supposedly because of her parents divorce, and all of the baggage that came with that.
You state that, hopefully, Diana would have found her Mr. Rightwell, would that Mr. Right have been Prince Andrew?
You realize there was a reason people called Diana Dutch, don't you?

From what I have read Diana had a difficult relationship with everyone in her life including her own family. It would be hard for a person like that to find happiness and true love.

I have heard the same, she was constantly on the outs with somebody be it friend's or family. When she had members of the royal family on her side, she would do something that would turn them against her, she alienated from basically everyone that supported her. No matter who she was with, she would never be happy.

                    Excellent post Jackie-Kennedy!
Also, funny that you are using Jackie's name, as I read in a book that she (Jackie), could not believe how Diana 'aired her dirty laundry in public'something Jackie would never have done. Now that's class!!!
