Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Harris Yulin

    CharlesHubbell — 19 years ago(July 08, 2006 01:09 PM)

It's been said many times on this board and I'll add to the praise Harris Yulin is a fantastic actor. I've recently revisited the Deep Sapce Nine collection of episodes on DVD from Netflix and, although I'm still not a fan of the series, Mr Yulin's performance in the episode Duet is, pardon the pun, stellar.
I was moved by his passion and vulnerability which actually seemed out of place among some of the other performances in that show. Mr Yulin made the story in that episode seem important and urgent. I was completely engrossed in all of his scenes. It a performances like his that keeps this episode fresh and exciting to re-watch unlike much of DS9 which through the years has become dated and stale to revisit.

I agree with your comment about Yulin, but completely disagree about DS9. Its the only Star Trek series I watch. It has not dated and is extremely relevant.

Absolutely. I always keep a copy of Duet on my hard drive - his performance is unlike anything else I've ever witnessed and the sheer power of the writing leaves me wanting more. "What you call genocide, I call a day's work" - it doesn't get better than that. Where his character begins to break down, that is art and talent defined.

It's the most chilling performance on the whole of Star Trek IMO
              DS9 was also fantastic

I couldn't shake the feeling that I recognised his voice and his looksand Harris Yulin is exactly who I was thinking it could be. Lone behold, it was! 😃 Wonderful performance. Just further reminds me what a good actor he is, even if he is overlooked. I think many remember him as the judge in Ghostbusters 2! But he's been in so much more and it's always good to see him in a small part here and there. 😃

Indeed, that has got to be some of the best acting in all of Star Trek, and no doubt the best among the smaller roles.

I found the famous scene from "Duet", on YouTube.
If you've seen the episode, I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about.

I'm re-watching DS9 again (been years since my last visit) and I'm watching the very same episode right now. The acting is superb especially on Harris Yulin's part.

I realize this thread has been around for years, but Netflix recently added DS9 to it's instant watch lineup. I am a fan of the show (it's my favorite Trek hands down), and "Duet" is among the best of Trek. It was only this time around though that I realized it was Harris Yulin. As I watched him become angry during his scenes where he was provoking Major Kira, suddenly it clicked and I said out loud "Oh my god it's Judge Wexler!".
Yulin's performance was flawless, impeccable, strong, powerful, there are so many words to describe it. I was moved to tears when his character broke down, and you just knew he had seen so many atrocities that haunted his waking moments as well as his dreams, and he felt he needed to make restitution. Just a powerful episode, and another reason why Yulin is one of the most talented actors in the business today.

This episode MADE ME a Harris Yulin fan. It was so powerful. So amazing. So moving. I was haunted by this episode for YEARS after i first sawed it aired the very first time. That was good script writing and STELLAR ACTING. If I ever got a chance to meet Mr. Yulin, I would have shook his hand and said simply "Thank you". Such art is a gift to the world.

                                  I have seen
                                  Duet
before on several occasions and have always considered it to be high on the list of all-time greatest Trek episodes. I watched it again tonight and as always, when Mr Yulin's character breaks down, so do I. His performance here is amazing. The purity of emotion displayed in that penultimate scene is the stuff of legend. He transcends entertainment, reaching the level of true art. This is in my personal Trek Top Ten, and I feel that even a non-Trek Fan will be touched by this episode.
Once again, my hat is off to this great performer and talented man. Jolan Tru Harris Yulin.

DS9 had it's share of some of the best actors in the Star Trek franchise. I've just rewatched Duet a few days ago, and it was brilliant. Among the top 10 Trek episodes ever. Yulin was fantastic, truly great acting.
DS9 also had Andrew Robinson and Louise Fletcher in the recurring cast. When Winn showed up, I always expected her to yell "Mister McMurphy!".

Yeah his one episode performance blew away all the other ST:DS9 performances over 175 episodes. But Mr. Yullin is on a whole 'nother level.
