I'm assuming more. He had, probably, a huge tussle with trying to push the car away. He probably died within 3-5 mins until he couldn't push anymore and the car crashed his lungs and he suffocated. I would say that he did suffered until he gave his last breath, and less by the impact of of the car pinning him against the fence and the mail box.
Very tragic and very hard to think about.

this is a terrible thing to bring up but couple of years ago there was a news story/video that went viral of a Chinese student being caught in a malfunctioning elevator - and it took the guy a few minutes to die of crushed lungs/suffocation

It's morbid to think about, but I assume his back was turned away from the vehicle and he was right up by the gate/post area. (was he trying to c5b4lose a broken gate?) The initial impact would be the Jeep's bumper/license plate area hitting around his knees/thighs. That would have caused a sort of whiplash effect on his upper body. His head probably would have hit the car window or maybe the gate area and knocked him out instantly. I'd guess he didn't suffer much at all. RIP!
