Stuart Wilson is a fineone could say exceptionalactor & it's a shame he's not better recognized (he hasn't even got a fansite). He can give performances that are magnetic (Pallisers, Jewel in the Crown, Anna Karenina) or understated (Death & the Maiden, Prime Suspect), and he is always compelling. Few actors have enough charisma to seem a worthy villain for an actor as powerful as Anthony Hopkins, but Wilson does it with ease in Mask of Zorro. I wish he had more work in Hollywood, but he's probably got too much class to succeed there.

I couldn't agree more. I first noticed him in the superb BBC drama 'Running Blind' (how I wish it was on video/DVD) & have seen lots of his films & TV work. The best ever though was seeing him in Anthony & Cleopatra at the RSC Stratford a few years ago. As he's previously mainly done stage work in London, I jumped at the chance to drag my husband & 13 year old son to Stratford. Our seats were cramped, uncomfortable, it was incredibly hot, & the performance was 3 hours, with a short break, but I didn't care. His performance was brilliant. Afterwards, whilst5b4 wandering around along the streets of the town, I spotted him walking towards us. To the eternal shame of my son, I asked for an autograph, & he was very kind to oblige. He seemed a bit surprised someone recognised him, I thought, & did seem rather shy. But very charming, & very tall! That year I was fortunate enough to see sveral of my favourite actors on stage, but seeing Stuart Wilson was the best of all.

I first clocked Stuart Wilson in The Pallisers, playing a complex character - a bit villain, bit victim, but with redeeming qualities too.
A very fine actor. Maybe he didn't realise how good he is. Wonder if he'd have had a more interesting/high profile career if he'd stayed in UK. Then again, being high profile isn't always all that good for your career.
Wish I'd seen him on stage though.
