I read that it's because it wasn't emotional enough to just have Ana Lucia dying as she wasn't that popular. Libby was becoming popular because of her character seeming nice and helping people so killing her got some emotional response. I actually cried when Libby was announced dead because I was really starting to like her.

She was killed of for the same reason Rodriguez and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbajbe were because they got pinched for dunk driving
