Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Gwen Verdon

    xavrush89 — 22 years ago(February 11, 2004 02:49 AM)

I come to Gwen Verdon's board and there's not a single thread here? I would have thought the fairly recent success of the film version of
    Chicago
would have revived interest in her! Have none of you seen
    Damn Yankees!
    ?
    Cocoon
    ?
    Marvin's Room
?! Do I have to do everything?! LOL
But seriously, I am proud to be the first to start a message board for the late great Gwen Feel free to post your memories, favorite films, etc.

Just watching the three movies I put in my post above is enough. But if you can get a hold of the ORIGINAL Broadway soundtrack to Chicago, it's a winner too. Not that there's anything wrong with the Bebe Neuwirth revival, but Gwen really "sells" her songs (along with Chita Rivera and Jerry Orbach, too bad Gwen couldn't have been the voice of a Disney cartoon character like Jerry in
        Beauty and the Beast
        ).
I wish I could have been alive when Gwen & Bob were at their peak, but at least they can be seen together briefly in
        Yankees
        .

I know what you mean, there are a billion posts for people like Hillary Duff but nearly no posts for Bob Fosse, Gwen Verdon, ect. I wish for once that people would look past the Pop/Disney Channel/Hip hop stars and look at the real talent.

Please, "real talent", the dancers of today could dance circles around those of 60 years ago. I've watched enough old movies to see that. Although Ms Verdon did look good in black face in The Mississippi Gambler. lol

I felt the same way when I stumbled to the Herta Ware page and found that she passed away this past August.

What a talented lady. I wish I could have had the chance to see her on Broadway. It would have been a real treat.

Thanks for starting up this topic and also for reminding us of such great talents such as Gwen and Bob. Too bad I wasn't around when they were at their very best. But, it will always be grand to see them dancing or choreographing as well as they did - because being such perfectionists as they both were - they managed to do everything great! What a feeling!

I've just watched DAMN YANKEES again - thank goodness for film, so that Verdon's Lola is there for all to see. As "Mama Rose" sang in GYPSY, "Ya either got it, or ya ain't!"

Go to Fosse.com if you haven't already, a place to discuss the man the works and the people in his world. I think due to the site crashing a couple of times people have been staying away, but it is back up.
I think it is the only forum to discuss people like Gwen, Chita, and of course Bob.

Gwen was too much for 1950s Hollywood. They cut all her "bumps" out of "Damn Yankees." Her next movie was "Gentlemen Prefer Brunettes." She was cut comletely out of it because her dancing was too sexy. Her stage role in "Can Can" was split between Shirley MacLaine and Juliet Prowse in the movie version.

I saw Can Can awhile back and didn't know that Gwen was in the stage version of it. I think she'd have been great in the movie version too. And that's not to take away from Juliet Prowse or Shirley MacLaine, but I'm wondering why they were picked over Gwen for the movie version.

The reason for there not being any posts for Gwen when you wrote your post 10 years ago is that IMDb regularly scrubs the message boards of older posts. Since Gwen died in 2000, there would have been many "RIP type" messages dating from that time.
