I've only seen her in five films but I think she's the best I've ever seen. The fact she also writes and directs films, good films, just makes her even more impressive.

Liv Ullmann is certainly one of the best actresses of all time. I certainly wouldn't argue with anyone praising her as the best. Her performances in Persona, Scenes From a Marriage and Face to Face are among the most shattering and awesome performances in cinema history.

She's a great dramatic actress though it's a bit pointless to dispute if she is greater trhan Katharine Hepburn, greater than Marlene Dietrich or so on. She's very much to her favour in close-up svenes and in the early days of cinema (up to about 1950 I think) you couldn't film faces or the like or ecord voices with the kind of sharp, poetic high-resolution close-up that's possible now. So Garbo, Joan Crawford or the young Ingrid Bergman could ver have been captured in the same way Liv Ullmann is in
Persona
or
Autumn Sonata
(i'm not saying one way is "more true" than the other, of course we're talking acting here) -

She's certainly one of the best. That's out of discuss.
I've seen her outstanding performances in Persona, Cries and Whispers and Scenes from a Marriage (until now).
Ingmar Bergman and her created extraordinary films! -

I understand your point, but she got to work with Bergman because she is good. That's a bit like saying "What about all those garage bands who were never allowed on the radio like the Beatles were?" They stayed in the garage because they were crap.
For me Liv Ullmann is the greatest female actress of all time, when it comes to the business of acting. Not a "siren," goddess, or a screen legend, but she doesn't have to be. -

well she's a screen legend to me. Sure she had a great director like Bergman to help her but it takes a great actress to master those close ups the way she did. It was perfect because she has to have one of the most expressive faces in cinema history.
Mama:They're all gonna laugh at you!
Carrie:For reals?Then I'll f*k them UP! -
