Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Aisha Tyler

    Kunle2002 — 18 years ago(March 29, 2008 10:27 AM)

I think the only reason she was on friends was because the producers finally caved to all the accusations of racism. I mean, the 'Friends' show was cast in NY, and yet there was a disproportionately small number of blacks on the show. I think that's the only reason they decided to cast Aisha Tyler in the role of Joey and Ross' girlfriend. And yet, I wasn't really satisfied, because it seems there was no chemistry between her and Joey or Ross. Joey didn't even feel that bad when they broke up, and Ross didn't even seem that into her. I hated it. Maybe Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer were just uncomfortable acting intimate with a black actress.

Absolutely. She is a prime example of Affirmative Action gone terribly wrong.

Yes, every black person playing opposite of a white person on TV is only due to affirmative action. (for the slow, I'm being sarcastic). So, just because YOU (and your helium inflated ego) weren't satisfied with her performance means they only cast her because she was filling a racial quota. Rightand t5b4hey filmed the moon landing in Scorsese's basement.
BTW, Aisha was not the first black woman Ross and Joey fought over. Gabrielle Union was first. But I guess she too was filling that quota.
People like you disgust me. Consider yourself and this entire thread ignored.

i completely agree with amt12. this thread is just full of ignorance. just because you don't think she had chemistry with matt and david, you honestly believe she was only put on the show to meet a racial quota? so from now on whenever there are interracial relationships on tv shows and movies, its just to meet the quota right? forget the fact that it's simply art imitating life, as there are plenty of interracial couples roaming the streets everyday. and i'm from a large city, so i see this daily, and don't think twice about it. seeing it on the show didn't strike me as weird or uncommon, and i thought aisha's performance was fine. it was just another interracial romance being portrayed on screen. and you not thinking she had any chemistry with matt and david is simply your opinion. i think aisha was great as charlie and had great chemistry with both matt and david.

I agree it was sad, it pissed me off when Joey did not care when they broke up, remeber that girl Chalnder kissed Joey was so mad Chanlder had to stay in a box. Both Joey and Ross both wanted that white girl (Racheal) Charlie was just a fill in as most black women are on TV =/

OMG, THANK YOU, someone finally said EXACTLY what I was thinking. I just didn't get the vibe that Joey was that into Charlie. I don't know whether the writers did that deliberately.

To be fair, none of the bitpart other halves had great chemistry with the regulars. Janine the dancer (Elle step forwards) had ZERO chemistry with Joey, that student Elizabeth that Ross was dating never seemed very authentic with Ross and there are others I can't think of, off the top of my head. The trouble with Friends was you never expected any of their girlfriends/boyfriends to last as they were only ever cast for a few episodes/half a series. Mike, Phoebe's husband, was the only exception and even he seemed to vanish for long periods.

i think they had good chemistry as far as the comedy went she played off ross and joey very well and her scenes were funny and her timing was spot on but as far as the sexual tension not so much but i think part of that was because joey didn't have anything in common with her and still wanted rachel and lets face it ross is awkward around all women (and davd can't act) i really loved the character of charlie i thought she was elegant intelligent and above all beautiful

I agree that she did seem like kind of a guilt character.
I liked Aisha on the show, but I couldn't help thinking the same thing. By that point in the show, though, she was one of the only characters who I
                            didn't
                            find annoying!

I felt that way too. Esppecially because it was so late in the show that she was brought in, and after all these years of people complaining that there was no diversity on Friends.
That said, I thought she had good chemistry with Ross, though not with Joey. As someone pointed out, it was always difficult to buy into the new boyfriend/girlfriend characters because we all knew they weren't going to stay. The only two who ever stayed and had good chemistry with the actors were Tom Selleck and Paul Rudd.

The thought never crossed my mind that it might be affirmative action, however thinking about it, it is highly likely that the character was written specifically as a black character rather than just a character who happened to be black
