Monster is an incredible story. I could not be happier knowing he is writing and it will be on HBO. This could be one of the greatest Live action shows in history if done right and so far so good.

I have not heard anything about this project since mid 2013 when it was announced Del Toro wants to adopt it. I share the same level of enthusiasm as you do, but I don't think this project is in motion anymore.
Not sure why anyone would not want to adapt this gem of material.

I wish I had a production company to adapt mangas to tv and movies.
There are so many mangas treating with mature subjects just like Monster that deserve a shot on tv. The author, Naoki Urasawa, has written and drawn unbelievable thrillers that are so incredible that the North American public DESERVE to watch.
Man, if any of the great cable networks can green-light 20th Century Boys, it would be too good.

I feel you man. Monster, Berserk and so many others deserve to be recreated in live action medium and shown to the whole world. I can't believe this guy is more interested in making another popcorn fest Pacific Rim 2 when he got a green signal from the creator of Monster to do a movie/TV Series.

honestly, i disagree, i believe that comics and manga shouldnt be made into live action, most of them depict things that would be a pain to finance.
ecample: evangelion and attack on titan the bidgets would probably be higher thatn its requiredin animation, i believe animation (tradional not cgia) should be a viable alternative to tell stories, check out mask of the phantasm its one of the greatest batman films and it didnt invilve AAA stars or a 150 million budget, you could depict hell, outer space, period pieces, impossible to choreograph violence etc .
too bad people associate animation with childrens cartoons, i believe things like spawn and many animes (cowboy bebop, ghost in the shell, evangelion, death note, monster, parnaoia agent) etc, have nothing to ask of showtime/hbo etc in terms or quality

I wouldn't give up just yet! He mentions that he is adapting it and HBO series take a few years before they start production (this is from 14th August)

I keep checking back on the possible progress of this HBO project but haven't been able to find anything new. There's still an active link under "Movie Connections" but it gives up nothing if you don't' have Pro.
The Crunchyroll page is still up too, but the thing about del Toro having "to get permission, he (del Toro) needed to agree to submit an outline of every episode of the theoretical first season to Urasawa."
Sounds like an ego battle could have killed the project.
                Deep down, I'm pretty superficial.
