I tell you- I am a huge fan of Seinfeld and still watch it; know it by heart BUT I just hated when they killed Susan off. Why they didn't simply have her character break it off with George as she did previously or something other than fix it so she could never return unless that is what 'someone' wanted. I didn't think that episode was funny- I don't watch that episode because Susan is dead and they just 'walk away' and I felt they showed sympathy in the past when someone died- but not for Susan? Not even Elaine who liked her? It just didn't ring true for me.
They wrote her character in for a later episode in the form of a 'think back' for the one called The Betrayal the "backwards episode." She appeared so (just my opinion) it probably wasn't her idea/choice to leave Seinfeld in the first place. IDK.

I agree with the others in this thread who said because it was funny. If you didn't think so you're probably not as big of a Seinfeld fan as you think you are and just don't get it. Plus if you are such "a huge fan" you would know the story behind it. Watch the special features on the DVD set and you'll know.

Better addition to the trail of mayhem being left in the foursome's wake to have her die as a consequence of a George decision rather than her just break up with him. Many, many others just broke up with the foursome. In the mind of Larry David (et al), it's a tribute, an honor, to have such a special send off.
Besides, can't very well have the "foundation" if she just runs away with a cricket player. 😉

Seriously? I thought this was one of the truest moments in the series. The whole show revolves around the emotion of apathy. I thought it was perfect.
