..that there aren't more threads on James Shigeta, who was the Chow Yun Fat (as far as sex appeal is concerned) of the sixties. A gorgeous hunk of man who should have been a bigger star.

I found him attractive as well, he actually looks like one Filipino matinee idol back in the 50's, Luis Gonzales. Sorry couldn't find any pics of him though.
This is Luis Gonzales:
Kahn, I'm laughing at the superior intellect. -

It's hard to imagine such a good looking & manly guy like James Shigeta producing an offspring like Hiro no? LOL! I kid!

that's funny that you should mention thatChow Yun-fat was exactly who i thought of when i saw the clips of Shigeta's old films on "Slanted Screen"the charisma and star power just oozed from himhe and Chow have that classic movie star presenceback when "movie star" used to mean somethinghe was great in "Die Hard"he almost played his character TOO strong to the point where it was wrong that he died so early onit's a shame he doesn't get cast in more movies since he doesn't fit the stereotype that CornBread America is comfortable withlike most "threatening" asian actors

Watching Flower Drum Song right now and thinking the only movie or television role I can remember, of Mr. Shigeta's, is in Die Hard. He is extremely handsome and I'm wondering what he is doing these days.

Another movie that James Shigeta was in making his life all the more "curiouser and curiouser" is the Christian movie about a real life person, Nora Lam, in "China Cry." (1995)
It was the story of a young woman Nora and her wealthy family in China and how their lives changed so dramatically when Japan took over China in WWII.
James Shigeta played the heart-breaking role of Nora's father a wealthy doctor who ended up being forced into working scrubbing floors at a hospital.
Seeing James in the latter days of life in this light just breaks your heart.
Any of the very few interviews I have seen him in are heartbreaking too. I wish I knew more about him
Another role I just saw him in today is "Midway," playing a Japanese military man involved in the battle of Midway. (1976)

I agree with everyone here. This was a very good actor. I remember watching the movie years ago when Walk Like a Dragon came out. He should have had more and better roles but once again Hollywood doesn't use an actor right. A very good actor that deserved better roles.

Chow Yun Fat has sex appeal? I never saw that. Plus I don't think he's a very good actor. I still have yet to see a mainstream Chinese (or even Asian) Hollywood actor who is hot AND talented. The only person who I can think of at the moment is Takeshi Kaneshiro, but unfortunately, he's not Hollywood enough yet.

What? Are you serious? Check out Sung Kang, the Korean-American actor who co-starred in BETTER LUCK TOMORROW,THE MOTEL & THE FAST & THE FURIOUS:TOKYO DRIFThe's hot as hell AND talented! There's a lot of equally talented AA actors/actresses out there, but Hollywood won't give them the chance because they're still stuck in this outdated stupid belief that audiences won't see a movie with an Asian-American lead (never mind that BTL did pretty big business for a 'lil indie flick). And Chow Yun-Fatapparently you've never seen any of his Hong Kong filmshe's a straight-up movie star, with mad charisma and a strong presencecheck out these HK films of his:
THE STORY OF WOO VLIET aka GOD OF KILLERS
A BETTER TOMORROW
A BETTER TOMORROW,pt 3
CITY ON FIRE
PRISON ON FIRE
TO CATCH A THIEF
HARD-BOILED
FULL CONTACT
CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER
THE KILLER
If you're judging him by his appearances in American films, don't go by just thatthese are some of his best HK films, periodyou gotta see thesethey're show why he blew up to be such a major star in his native HK.
Also, Hollywood has us so brainwashed our society believing that only white men are qualified to be handsome, attractive and sexy (mainly because it was until just recently that white men ran Hollywood exclusively) that it's just flat-out disgusting, considering that white men aren't the only attractive men on the planet, even though Hollywood would have you believe otherwise. Start watching more Asian films (and Asian-American films) to see hot Asian male leads, in particular.
About Mr. ShigetaI love that "Outer Limits" episodeit's one of my favorites. That show was pretty advanced for its timeI can't think of any other show from that period that featured 2 white guys, a black man AND an Asian-American as astronauts? You wouldn't see anything like that until STAR TREK got on the air. Anyway, he was incredibly hot back in the day, and did have major presencein fact I remember reading a rare interview online with him in which he said that an agent or manager told him flat-out that if he was white, he would have been a bigger starand if you check his earlier work out, it's not hard to see why. I caught by accident a pretty good episode of the old spy show TO CATCH A THIEF from the '60's starring Robert Vaughn, and he co-starred in it as the main villain. And even though he was the bad guy, it was a very non-stereotypical role, plus he commanded such respect playing it, you couldn't help but give him his props, because he kicked some serious a** with it. I've only seen a couple of his films (the Western WALK LIKE A DRAGON,FLOWER DRUM SONG, which I need to see again anyway) and I've always wanted to see THE CRIMSON KIMONO, without success. Saw DIE HARD (good movie,BTW) and thought it was too bad that his character met an untimely end so soon. It's cool though, that he's left a strong body of work behind to admire and appreciate, and we can thank him for that, at least. -
