I read that he and his wife are separated. Does anyone know why? Just curious.

No, the only real mention of them being separated is a March TMZ story which mentions that his wife was auditioning for "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills". It refers to her as John's wife throughout the article but then casually mentions she is currently separated from John, even though he inserted himself in the audition tape. It does not appear that any divorce or separation papers have been filed since the article. I'm sure that if she makes the cut,5b4 more will be known about the status of their relationship.
