Back in the 70s was a game show called "Tattletales" where celebrity couples would compete for money that was then divided among the studio audience. They would be asked questions and then their partner would have to predict how they answered. I remember seeing Charles on the show with the actress Elizabeth Allen, who was playing on "CPO Sharkey" at the time. She would always refer to him as "My doll" when trying to predict how he would answer. Since it is now common knowledge that he was gay, I was wondering if anyone knew the story behind why these two particular people were paired up to be a celebrity "couple".
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. -

I wish I had an answer for you, but I can only say that I came here looking for the same answer. A few years ago I used to watch the Game Show Network a lot and after seeing CNR on countless Match Games and assuming he was gay, I was surprised to see him on Tattletales with a female partner. That episode made me think that maybe he was married at some point (I assumed the Tattletales couples were marriedI didn't watch it that much). Like I said, it was a few years ago, so I don't remember the details. Hearing that he'd died reminded me of that Tattletales episode, and looking at his IMDb bio made me wonder why there was no spouse ever listed. Sorry I can't help, but I thought you should know you're not alone in your curiosityI noticed that too.

I used to see Elizabeth quite a bit in NY in the 80's beofre she faded from view and moved upstate. She was often on the arm of Butch Romero. She was a wonderful woman. And if I'm not mistaken, save for one brief early marriage, a 'confirmed bachelorette".

I was Elizabeth Allen’s nephew and Godson, so I am in the best position to answer this question. She and Charles Nelson Reilly were extremely close and knew each other for over 20 years. They were never married, but they had such a deep affection for each other, in some ways, they could have been. They were more like soul-siblings. It also helped that they each lived relatively close to one another in Hollywood and often hung out together whenever they were in town at the same time. Their pet names for each other were “my doll,” a term that Charles coined for Liz, that’s how close they were. So, in many ways, they knew as much about each other as a true married couple would, even though Charles was indeed gay and my aunt’s only marriage was long ago in her past by this point in her life. It was therefore very appropriate that they performed as a couple on “Tattletales,” because on many levels, they loved each other like any married couple would and were the best of friends for many years!
