Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Brett Ratner

This clown had recently said (quite openly and without any shame) about the possibility of re-making the classic ENTER THE DRAGON (1973).
Besides the fact that there isn't another Bruce Lee anywhere around (or neither the rest of the supporting cast, including the late Jim Kelly), this so-called "director" does not have the talent, craft or neither the visual of iconic American director Robert Clouse.
Clouse (who died of kidney failure in 1997) was completely deaf and this allowed him to develop over the years a unique style based mainly on visual (this was why most of his films were action type).
It is not news that Clouse started off his career in short films (which earned him two Oscar nominations as best director) and television.
He understood cinematic language and visual.
Clouse was the perfect combination of elements of both Hollywood and Hong Kong film-making.
Although he is mostly famous for his incredible work in Enter the dragon (which was a very expensive picture that scored really well at the box office), Clouse specialised in the years to follow in great action B movies.
Some of his pictures developed cult-following over the years (including Black Belt Jones, The Ultimate Warrior, Darker than amber, Game of death, Battle Creek Brawl, Gymkata and the saga of China O'Brien I and II).
He literally invented a unique way of martial arts / action film-making (regular zooms in-out, close-ups, slow-motion techniques, etc..) that later became a brand of certain types of films.
I wonder how in the world Brett Ratner (whose the only thing in common with Bob Clouse is that he also worked with Jackie Chan) could compete with such 16d0iconic director in remaking a film that could never be repeated in history.
This guy can hardly use the camera and his films show hardly any directing skills.

I wouldn't use Gymkata or Game of Death as examples of good films directed by Clouse.
To be fair Clouse was a bit of a one hit wonder just like Ratner was. Clouse with Enter the Dragon and Ratner with Rush Hour. Neither director got close with matching the quality of their best film.
For what it's worth though, Enter the Dragon doesn't need to be remade. It's great as it is and if they do, they need to make sure they have a Hong Kong action director and martial art director or the fight scenes are likely to really suck.
