Why this guy isn't a huge star mystifies me.

I just started watching SNL as a kid when Piscopo/Murphy were becoming huge stars. I've since b68watched all the past seasons in reruns. Seriously, Piscopo stands right up there with the all-time best cast members. This guy was incredibly funny and creative. His HBO special in the 80's made me pee my pants with laughter.
He co-starred in a few films after leaving SNL and admittedly, one was pretty funny (Wise Guys) and one blew (Dead Heat) but what the heck happened after that?
This guy should have been a huge comedy star; he's loads more talented and funnier than almost all of the current crop of comedy stars. And that's not even taking into account the dude is an incredibly gifted multi-instrumentalist and singer. He also really comes across as one of the genuinely decent folk in the entertainment biz.
I realize stardom is not the brass ringa fulfilled life with ones whom you love and love you back is. I get that. But this is a mystery for me. Piscopo had all the weapons in his arsenal. Did he piss some Hollywood bigwig off ala the dude who directed Boondock Saints?
As for those who say Eddie Murphy should have helped himI agree. That's what friends do, period. -

Joe just didn't have what it takes to be a leading man. He was good in bit parts but he really can't act to save his life. He's at his best when he's doing a short skit or acting like a cartoon character. He did a good job but in the end he was a flash in the pan.
