- Election
- About Schmidt
- Citizen Ruth
1, 2, and 3 are all really tight, though

Anyone who thinks Sideways is better than both About Schmidt and Election 2000is simply a follower of movie trends and buys into anything any critics say. Sideways is hyped as the best reviewed movie of the year, and I believe some famous critic was quoted calling it "The only perfect movie this year." PERFECT movie??? You've got to be kidding me. Sideways, at most, was simply a DECENT movie. It wasn't bad, I'm not saying that at all. But my God, was it overrated. It doesn't deserve to be among the top 20 best movies of the year, not even close to being a great movie. It was boring, entirely full of itself, had no real plot, and the dialogue was far from imaginative. While I'm usually a big fan of Giamatti, his character was the most annoying lead character in any movie of the past 5 years. No wonder he hates his life, if all I did was obsess over wine, I'd have killed myself years ago. And Church, as his friend, was just an idiot, his character had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. And c'mon, seriously, if all his character wanted to do on the week before his marraige was get laid, why on earth would he go on a tour of wine country with his ugly whiny wino friend??? It's unrealistic and stupid, I find it amazingly hard to believe that those two would ever even be friends in real life. Sideways was stupid, simple, and too long. I work in a movie theater, so I've seen it in its entirety once, and caught many of the scenes several times after, and they become more annoying with each viewing. I can't believe this is getting the kind of praise its been getting, that is absolutely absurd. And to call it Payne's best film???? Not even close. About Schmidt and Election are both nearly flawless films, that are just as enjoyable every time you watch them. Sideways, however, will be forgotten about in four months time, when everyone realizes it was simply just an OK movie.

I agree with many of your points, and I do agree that "Sideways" is Payne/Alexander's weakest script, it is Payne's best direction yet. His work with actors is amongst the best directors today, and his use of music, editing, humanism, etc. is superb. But I do not think it is as good as "About Schmidt", although barely. The last shot of About Schmidt is the best thing that Payne has ever done, and Election is the only truly perfect comedy made in the past 10 years. But to dismiss Sideways in such a simplistic way is reductive and ignorant. You haven't posted an intelligent (many childish ones, granted) reason why you thought it wasn't good. Like I said, I agree that Sideways is not Payne's best film (the acting really saves it from mediocrity), but Payne is so intelligent, so fiercly devoted to showing real humans on screen, I cannot brush anything he does aside as stupid and simple.

100% agreed, Sideways was crap. Election is by far his best film, it's not even close.
