He's trying to fight death so hard he's forgetting to live. The dedication to stay that healthy is not worth the effort.
That said, I'm sure it's a sacrifice of sorts, because what he learns will most likely benefit the species in the long run, and those who come next will be able to skip all the experimental stuff and hard work and take a few pills.
