Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Vera Miles

    a610guy — 20 years ago(October 30, 2005 10:05 AM)

Just watched "The Wrong Man" for the umpteenth time last night on
TCM. Vera Miles was astounding as Rose Balestrero. Her scenes of
"coming unglued" were utterly realistic. I would have placed her
performance next to Joanne Woodward's Eve during the same time-frame.
No showboating. No scenery-chewing. No screaming hysterics.
    Just great acting.
The Academy made a mistake in omitting her from the 1956 Best Actress catagory.
As a post-script, what is your favorite "Woman Under The Influence" performance?
I'd place Ms. Miles high on the list, but my all-time favorite is
Liv Ullmann in "Face to Face".

I think Warner's thought so too - they rushed it out in December 1956 in order to qualify, and most likely submitted her in that category, but alas
Although she's a very good actress, Hitchcock, I think, was partly responsible for her Wrong Man performance, which leads me to believe that had she not been pregnant in 1957, and had she been able to to Vertigo, she would've blown Kim Novak's performance out of the water. She definately had it in her, and I know Hitch could've doen great things there with her. It's a cinematic loss.

I dont think anyone could possibly have bettered Kim Novaks haunting and hypnotic performance in Vertigo, but I agree that Vera Miles was grossly robbed of an Oscar nomination for her stunning, career-best work in The Wrong Man.
And if not for The Wrong Man, she should have at least gotten a Supporting Actress nomination for either Psycho or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, or even The Searchers. The fact that - like Vertigos own Kim Novak - she never even received an Oscar nomination is an absolute travesty.

Vera Miles is one of the most purely and genuinely BEAUTIFUL (as distinct from sexy, provocative, etc.) actresses of classic Hollywood. She remains underrated both as a beauty and as an actress.
