My sister was watching me watching a clip of Ethel Merman performing, and she asked me what Ethel was, referring to ethnicity. Does anyone know? I looked on websites about her, and couldn't find a hint.

I thought that was a rumor, because her stage name, Merman (actually Z16d0immermann, of course).

No, she was NOT Jewish. I think German and Scottish. From nndb: Father: (German, Lutheran)
Mother: (Scottish, Presbyterian)

Indeed, Merman was of Scots/Irish descent, and a devout, practicing Lutheran. Although she wasn't Jewish, she
was
a "New Yorker" through and through, all the days of her life, and her "New York" personality was often misinterpreted as a "Jewish" personality, which she wasn't always happy about.
