Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Doug McClure

As a child I watched The Virginian on New Zealand TV. It was the late 1960's and one man out shone all the rest. He was my hero - Trampas, played by Doug McClure. A few years ago they brought back 16d0some of the series as a kind of Retro curiosity. The character that I had almost forgotten spoke to me just as he had over 30 years earlier. Doug mcClure captured all the qualities that were important to me as a child - Courage, Strength, Humour, Tenderness, Personality, vulnerability, Loyalty and looking cool.
I would love to hear from other people who can relate to this.
    Geoff.

I agree; my whole family watched
      The Virginian
when it was originally broadcast, and there is no doubt that Trampas was our favorite character. There never seemed to be enough of Doug McClure in this show to satisfy us.
In addition to the qualities you've mentioned, I've always felt that it was also McClure's strong sense of basic human decency that came through in his portrayal, and made it so memorable. As a result, I've been a lifelong fan of his work. Thanks for your post!

Hello. I was surprised and pleased to get a reply to my message. I have been reading a book called a History of Televisions The Virginian, 1962 - 1971 by Paul Green. It can be found on the Internet. It is very good. I wish the series was available on DVD. Other lesser series seem to be readily available.
I agree with you comments about Doug.
        Geoff.

Doug McClure was the maybe best and most wonderful Cowboy-actor in the whole history of Television-Westerns. Here in Germany he was more famous than the Virginian himself. There was only one other Cowboy-actor who was as famous as he was: Robert Fuller.
But Doug was my personal favourite. His charm and humour and this special and warm smile he had could make one's heart melting!! And - not to forget - he might be the best rider of all those actors who pretended to be a cowboyhis way to sit in a saddle and control a horse was phenomenal!!
