Casting of this role came down to Kiel, Michael Sarrazin and Jon Voight.
Sarrazin was the original choice but for some reason withdrew - so it was down to Kiel and Jon.
Voight was picked and the rest is history.

I've seen the film at least 25 times and I can't possibly imagine anyone else other than Hoffman and Voight in the two main roles. In fact, the whole film was pretty much perfectly cast. In my opinion, Midnight Cowboy is one of the ten best American films of the last half century.
