Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Kiel Martin

    smokehill retrievers — 18 years ago(November 09, 2007 12:15 AM)

It's a shame we lost Kiel Martin so young. He did such a spectacular job of bringing the character J.D. Larue alive. We were serious Hill Street fans, and were really upset when the character was killed in the series not knowing, of course, that we were going to lose Kiel Martin, too.
That character was probably the most complex and difficult ones on that whole great series. It took much writing skill, of course, but I give most of the credit to Kiel Martin in bringing to life a terribly flawed, often incredibly sleazy, character that you couldn't help but sympathize with, and believe that down deep he was a really good man. Most of us know people like that, that you just want to bitch-slap them around the room to make them behave, and act like the decent person they really are.
He did a good job in a lot of bad or mediocre character parts over the years, but never turned in a bad performance, or failed to put forth an honest effort, no matter how rotten the script or direction. We should be so lucky with the current generation of blow-dried nonentities that earn t2000he big bucks at the box office.
    RIP.

Yes, he was an 'excellent' actor. He was always so 'on' with the characters he portrayed and put his all into it, you can tell, and some of which looked not so easy to do. He did seem so natural at it though. Great voice, great look, great everything. He is sorely missed. Just think of all the other things we could've seen him in. What he has done will always be treasured.

I suppose it also helped that Kiel Martin was a real life drug addict and alcoholic.

Kiel is great regardless as to where he films, and he really does spectacular acting performances on many a television drama series.
Yes, that is a tragic shame that Kiel has passed at such a young age, and he works very stridently throughout his all-too-brief career to continue to entertain audiences for decades to follow.
Very true that he proves his talent as quite excellent, and not enough favorable remarks may be made to substantiate that claim because commenting about his outstanding achievements and his under-appreciated talents really says it all!

Martin was great as lovable sleazeball J.D. on Hill Street Blues. He was likewise excellent in Trick Baby.

He was great as J.D. LaRue on
                    HSB
as well as his TV partner, Taurean Blacque's Neal Washington, and definitely loved him in
                    Trick Baby
. Very handsome man, and was a truly underrated actor.

Yeah, that's very true all the way around all right.
How true! - Kiel was really hot, excellent and underrated all at the same time.
Really true - "It's a shame we lost Kiel Martin so young" - because that says it all - in addition to his subject line.
Missing Kiel - what wonderful roles he performed and brought to screen!

Remembering Kile Martin on his birthday.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
