Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jayne Mansfield

    vnisanian2001 — 11 years ago(May 26, 2014 09:56 AM)

Was he afraid of missing Jayne's next gig? Could that have been the reason he was driving way too fast?

He was 19 years old and had been up for a couple of days traveling for Gus (the owner of the club she was appearing at). It was the end of June and insects were rampant, so a truck spraying an insect defogger was ahead in the road. There was an 18 wheeler behind the truck and he was going very slow due to fog the defogger was111c spreading. Ronnie Peterson was the driver and didn't see the truck apparently and the car slid underneath the 18 wheeler.

And not mentioned on Wikipedia, but the reason Jayne performed at that club to begin with on that night, was because she did it as a favor for Mamie Van Doren, her friend and co-star in
        The Las Vegas Hillbillys
, who was unable to perform there, for an unknown reason.

She and Mamie were definitely NOT friends. Jayne didn't like Mamieat all. Jayne was scheduled to perform at Gus Stevens' later that summer.she went ahead and filled in for Mamie at the earlier date to make it a vacation of sorts for her and the kids.

Well, sorry about that. I was only going by what the
            Mysteries and Scandals
documentary said, and I am curious if you have seen it. In all honesty, I didn't know that about the two women, until you told me.

LOLthe one movie they are in together is called LAS VEGAS HILLBILLYS. Jayne refused to be in the same scene with Mamie so a stand-in was used! Mamie later told me in an interview I did with her for an old website of mine that it was Jayne's idea not hers.

Mamie have made it sounded like they were good friends. I think it was the A&E Biography where Mamie gushed over Jayne. I know they were both at the Whiskey A Go Go club in LA in 1964 with John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. George famously threw a drink at a photographer but it landed on Mamie instead.
