She is DEFINITELY not 100% fluent, even if she grew up with some relatives who were. Plus, her mom definitely appears to be a dominant English speaker, at least from the few interviews I've seen with her, so it seems like Eva is at least third-generation. Listen to any interview she's done in Spanish and it's apparent in the first 30 seconds that she's not all that fluent. What she is able to say is rather slow-coming, intonation is a little off, doesn't speak with much complexity, etc. But yes, she can speak in complete sentences in a "controlled" context. I don't think she'd do that well just going off the cuff.
However, I'd definitely give her credit for trying. I think she's studied it and it speaks well for someone who is not speaking it as a native language. Knowing Spanish isn't "genetic," and it's sad when some people who have Latin American ancestors are treated like they are failures for not knowing Spanish, especially when they are third-, fourth-, fifth-generation American. The expectation for knowing a2000 language other than English does not seem to be the same for non-Latino Americans. I feel bad for Latinos living in the United States who are criticized for not being fluent, because children don't have the choice about what the dominant language of their home life will be.

^^^I am embarassed when people ask if I speak Thai or Tagolog but I don't know it very well. I know a lot of Thai in general conversation when listening but I don't speak very well. They make me feel bad for it lol. I do wish I could've learned a ton of languages, I'm good at learning it when I am taught.
do IMDB people have nothin better to do? =P

She is American of Mexican decent and growing up in Texas may have rarely spoken Spanish. Hell, the vast majority fo people who lived in LA in the 1960s, 70s and 80s rarely heard people speaking Spanish. Eva appears to have 'found' her Mexican roots in the last several years and has learned to speak Spanish. She is increasing her earning power by appealing to foreign-born Latinos by speaking two languages so good for her.

You explained it so well I'm not going to say anything else. If any of you do understand Spanish here are examples of her trying

and it's exactly like you said. I think she has gotten better through the years. I believe her boyfriend is the president of Mexican conglomerate Televisa. The U.S. Latino that speaks the best Spanish in my opinion is Marc Anthony.

Not 100%, she understands it well enough, but she is not a fluent speaker.

No she is not. I saw her recently being interviewed about her perfume in Spanish. She had to keep switching back to English to explian her points.

When her career goes even more on the skids, she can get some work in Mexico doing those telenovelas.

She more than likely speaks that Mexican/Pocha Spanish. I can bet Gweneth Paltrow speaks better Spanish being that she learned Spanish in Spain.
