It's covered in one whole sentence in the first episode of the season. ("Dangerous Son" - they seem to like sons, or not)
Jake says: "What happened? Did they knock you back to Uniform?"
          Tripp replies: "These are stripes
You're as dumb as you look. I just passed the Sergeants exam."
So he got promoted. Doesn't look right though!

Thanks, Tom. I guess I was so excited to watch it, that I missed that sentence. I'll be sure to pay better attention when I watch the reruns on A & E. I appreciate your answer.

I know I thought he looked so mch better in a suit and tie. I guess they don't want him to outshine Horatio lol! But it really detracts from the show as a whole, and I think we should do a write in campaign to ask them to dress him back up bc he looks so good in a suit! He is such a good actor anyway so believable that I guess he could wear about anything!

I thought he looked better in a suit too. I wonder if CSI and CSI NY will follow suit (No pun intended). And thanks Tom!

What CBS won't tell you: they had to give Johnny Whitworth's character a reason to stick around the show (Gotta give Calleigh a boyfriend, ya see), so they made him a detective on the squad. Thus, Rex's Frank Tripp gets moved over to uniform, which sure -looks- like a demotion to meand a bad move by the writers on "Miami". I still love the show, but the words "jump the shark" are starting to come to mind.

When he said he got promoted, I thought it was a joke and that I'd missed something important like a "demotion" somewhere along the way. I thought he'd gotten in trouble. I've been trying to catch reruns to see what happened. Frank in uniform was so distracting to me that I was actually concentrating on him more than Horatio. It's had the opposite affect on me if they were trying to make him less important than Horatio. I wish they'd put him back in a suit. He's just another detective then. He doesn't wear designer Italian suits for Pete's sakeQ

I was a cop for 25 years, so let me explain how this thing works
When you get promoted from Detective to Sergeant, most police departments wontlet you stay in teh unit where you were promoted from. they require you to spend some time back in uniform, getting supervisory experience. Once you have gained that experience, you can get back into detective section, now as a Det. Sgt.
that is what hapened to me. I worked 10 years in Organized Crime/vice Investigations. when I was promoted to Sergeant, I went back to uniform for about a year before I went back into detective Section, this time as a Detective Sergeant.
that would explain why Tripp wne into Uniform. Heis now back in the diviosn as a Det. Sgt..

Thanks for the info. That explains a lot. I wish it had been a little clearer in the episode.

An excellent explanation from you kkirves; recently I watched
A&E's The First 48 Hours and Miami Homicide Detective Joe Chilacee
(may have misspelled the name) was being promoted from
sergeant to lieutenant and he explained that it is the policy
of the MDPD for any detective being promoted to be reassigned
back to uniform patrol to get supervisory experience. And
he stated how much he would miss homicide after going back
to uniform. So your explanation is very credible and I believe
that is also the policy of the majority of police/sheriffs
                            departments in Florida.

Thanks you, kkirves. I've only just started watching this particular season. I caught what he said but it still made no sense, so that helped me heaps. Between the shaved head and uniform I've been quite distracted
