It should be pointed out that Britney Spears wasn't the first recording artist to make heavy use of this practice. (See Madonna and Janet Jackson, both more talented than Britney as well as her biggest influences)
Perhaps Whitney Houston said it best when discussing Britney's accused lip-syncing in 2009:
