Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Charlie Kaufman

I am intrigued by his persona and am going through an existentialist angst which endear me to all of his films. Many people say he plays the "tortured soul" shtick but I think he really is kind of in a rut because of the kind of films made nowadays. He would have flourished in the 60s or 70s. Having said that I do think he should try something more mainstream-shouldn't give up his artistic authority but rather incorporate them in something more "upbeat" perhaps.
I was wondering-How much do you reckon he is worth? Looking at the BO intake of his films I doubt very much, but keep in mind that he is a "name" writer-which isn't saying much but still. If he wrote a script I am sure he could make around 2 million off it(provided it is mainstream and not artistic). I would say he is probably worth around 3-5 million, nothing more. And I might even be going too far with that assumption.
I admire its purity. A survivor unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.

His name recognition (post-Oscar win) should net him at least a million per script. But if you consider how uncommercial his stuff is, I'd say the figure is much lower. He probably makes most of his bread and butter doing uncredited re-writes (Kung Fu Panda 2, etc).

Just because Charlie is an amazing writer please don't think writing is something that comes easy to him. Don't go off spouting that he could write awesome mainstream stuff super easy. If you learned anything from his movies its that writing is very difficult for him. Anything that he writes is probably very difficult. He pushes himself very hard. If he were to write some michael bay like plot that too would be hard because he is Charlie Kaufman.
I would also wager he probably wishes he made more money. God knows he deserves it for some of the creations he has brought us already.

            Agreed.
Our friend also claimed Kaufman doesn't do rewrites. Sorry, but he does.
