All-star cast at York Theatre Royal celebrate long career of actor Freddie Jones

An all-star cast gathered together for a charity evening at York Theatre Royal in order to celebrate the illustrious career of actor Freddie Jones.
The event was held to raise money for the theatres Access For All fund, with proceeds from the night going towards making De Grey rooms accessible.
Actors involved incluced Coronation Streets David Neilson, Toby Jones and Niamh Cusack.
The performance consisted of a rehearsed reading of King Lear, the titular role played by Freddie Jones. The experience of watching a reading, as opposed to a full performance, did not diminish the impact of Shakespeares play, chronicling the descent of a great man at the height of his powers into confusion and eventual madness.
Veering between vicious whimsy and avuncular forgetfulness, the tragedy of King Lears decline and dementia is brought home to our own 21st century experience.
Cordelia, the daughter he spurns early on in the play for her refusal to flatter him, was played with simple gravity and grace by Rachel Pickup.
Another notable performance was from Paterson Joseph, growing in stature and authority over the course of his performance as King Lears other bastard son, Edgar. David Neilson brought the same characteristic gentleness to the part of nobelman Kent that he does to Roy Cropper.
The star-studded audience enhanced the excitement of the charity event, as much of the Emmerdale actors were in attendance, along with Robin Hoods Jonas Armstrong. Many rose to their feet in a touching tribute to Freddie Jones, a much deserved nod to a distinguished career.
