He probably thought it felt more dramatic this way. Hollywood is always known for playing fast and loose with the facts and never letting them get in the way of what they feel is a good story. I like the movie a lot, but it is fiction. Don't expect to learn the real story of Ed Wood and his crew from it. For starters, it's entirely untrue that Bela Lugosi hated Boris Karloff (while not close friends or anything, between them there always was mutual respect and the most cordial professional relationship) or that Lugosi hadn't worked for years until Wood cast him in
Glen or Glenda
(for starters, he was in two movies the year before
