I know this is a dumb question to ask but, what is the "Big Mystery" about Howard Hughes??? I have always heard people make reference to him and I was just wondering what the big deal was?
I just finished watching "The Aviator" with Leonardo Dicaprio as Hughes. It was a very good movie! I had no idea that he was so ib68nvolved with Katherine Hepbern before her love affair with Spencer Tracy. Anyways, I noticed that Howard Hughes was portrayed as a very eccentric man who was partially deaf and had OCD. Was this the reason that he is immoritalized? His eccentricity or his OCD? Was it because of his aircrafts? What is the big Howard Hughes Mystery???!!!

Being culturally illiterate is not a virtue. Go do a search on Google to find out who Howard Hughes was.
As for the film, it's highly fictionalized including the Hughes/Hepburn relationship which was an affair that lasted only a couple of years and not the six years the film claims. -

I dunno much, but I think that it is because of how wealthy he was. He was really famous during his life. He made planes, made movies, dated movie stars, he was everywhere. Then, he just disappeared out of the public eye. His illness must have been interesting. The once glamorous Howard Hughes was terrified of germs and locked himself up. Well, that is why I find him interesting.

With all due respect, The Hughes/Hepburn relationship lasted at least 4 years, the movie is not as fictionalized as some anti-Aviator people claim, in fact it is one of the most accurate biographies in years when it comes to the essentials.

And what is your basis for knowing how long the Hughes/Hepburn relationship was? My source is her autobiography. What is yours? The Aviator is full of inaccuracies about all aspects of Hughes' life.

Would you like to be a little nicer? No one insulted you; the original poster only asked a question, and the person who responded about the Hughes/Hepburn relationship was only giving some input based on the matter. Sorry if this is a little straight forward.

Part of the mystery is what happened to him - why did his health deteroriate - he eventually became a recluse and died a mysterious death - some people have claimed that he was murdered . He became a drug addict attended by a bunch of Mormons - some say he was given a lethal dose of codeine . Then there is the whole issue of the missing will - it took about 20 years for them to sort it out .

Well, he did the drugs because he was addicted to them after having been given them during his recoverly from some pretty serious injuries. Apparently, the addiction was stronger than the demands of his OCD.
I don't know that there is a "mystery" about Howard Hughes; there are some very interesting aspects of his life and times, but nothing is intended to be mysterious. There are hints to some clandestine activities, but overall, he is known as a very rich businessman, a movie maker, a great aviator, something of a playboy and real estate mogul, all while being a sufferer of a debilitating condition, and one who secluded himself for the last 20 or so years of his life. Perhaps the details of his death and the hoodoo over his will were somewhat mysterious, but overall, I don't see that interest in such a bizzare life can be considered mysterious. -

movies, aviation, esp. commercial aviation, the development of Las Vegas, military planes, helicopters, missle systems, the development of U.S. military in general in the mide to late 20th century, cable television, satellites - he didn't necessarily invent a lot of these things, but he and his empire had a lot of important effects on all of them and more. He was an extremely important man who shaped American life and life on the planet a lot more than the average person realizes.
In addition, his personal life - from his affairs with Hollywood starlets to his personal daring in aviation to his fights with mental illness to his lapse into being a total recluse - it all adds up to a very, very interesting story. The man who seemingly had everything that everyone seems to want - and yet could never have so many of the truly great things in life that so many people seem to take for granted.
