He quit the show as he was no longer having fun; he was going to quit in 2012 but was persuaded to carry on until Letterman retired.
His new talk show on History will be a lot like LLS with a monologue and guests. -

just saw the game show for the first time, and thought the same thing. totally boring game show, I'd rather watch an old rerun of password from the 70's. well not really but I was just thinking why would you quit a talk show late night interviewing celebs and doing comedy to do this stupid game show? I liked his unorthodox, sometimes bizarre style. it was refreshing

He didn't quit Late Late specifically to do a game show - that was in the works for three years (and already on the air for three months) before he left. Interviewing celebs day after day isn't all it's cracked up to be. I know WE enjoyed watching it, but if you have to actually do it, it would get really monotonous and boring. The game show is silly fun, quick and easy to tape half a season's worth in a few weeks, and pays really well. Which leaves him lots of time/money to do other things, like spend quality time with his young children, or do the weekly Join or Die show on History. He's also currently working on a new pilot for NBC, which - if we're lucky - will get picked up for the next season.

really his was the only late night talk show I would watch. I grew up on johnny carson and never liked david letterman much, jay leno was ok, he had some funny sketches, and the new guys who replaced letterman and leno are fine, but the celebrities? his interviewing who? some ditzy 20 year old girl on some obscure tv show that only 12 year old girls watch or something.
ferguson brought something really different, he refused to do the normal interview, "so, you have a new movie out" etc etc instead he'd steer it into a sometimes truly bizarre direction. it didn't always work and it's not for everybody for sure but I loved it and was really surprised and sad to hear he was going to leave.
how about a triumph the insult dog talk show? I'd tune into that!
