Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Anna Faris

    elskootero-1 — 11 years ago(December 17, 2014 08:36 PM)

Before anyone jumps on me, I understand that she can pronounce her name any way she chooses. It's just that AH-NA sound so snotty and elitist for someone so young and not a member of the British Royal family.

Meh, I think it sounds better pronounced that way than the other way. Sounds more sophisticated.

its not really a snooty way of pronouncing it, its like a completely different name, its just the spelling that throws people off. I know three people that pronounce their name the way she does, one spells it Anna and the other spells it Ana and the other Ahna. Its not just her deciding to pronounce it that way its an actual name. The main character is frozen has that name too.

^This. I don't think she just decided go wake up one day and pronounce her first name a completely different way. I'm sure her parents pronounced it that way since she was born.

It actually sounds very American to say Arna rather than Ahh na. It might have a slight r with RP English, but it isn't intentionally supposed to be an Ar-na sound.

It comes from smoking too much crack.

I've known a girl for 15 years who pronounces it that way. It's not "snooty", it's just the name their parents gave them. As others have said, it's an actual name. Not her fault you're ignorant.

No "ar". It's commonly "an-na" here in America (which is what OP is used to), but Anna Faris, my friend, and the Frozen character are all "ah-na".

Although I have heard her husband refer to her as "onna". Which we would never say in Britain

The way her husband says it is "ah-na". Like the Frozen character.
                            "An-na" is more like "annie".
It's kinda hard to explain over text. I'd have to say it. I'm not sure if different accents are what's making it confusing to begin with, but imagine an American (from California, so not with a southern, eastern, or midwestern accent) saying "ah-na" and "an-na".

Onna would be the phonetic pronunciation of her name, which is most commonly pronounced phonetically as Anna. Like the Beatles song.
i.e. Anna as she pronounces it rhymes with Donna, whereas it would normally rhyme with banana.

I think people are saying ah-na as in arna, that what confused me at first because to me, ahh sounds like the phonic A not the letter R.
In frozen it sounds like R na but the people i know in real life call themselves ann na.

There is no arna pronunciation in Frozen. I've never heard anybody pronounce the name Anna as Arna.

We always pronounce it like that in Germany and since she has some German roots, maybe that's the reason her parents are pronouncing it that way I like it either way.
