In one episode of Andy Griffith, Jack Dodson as Howard talks about his mustache. He wants to keep it and his girlfriend Millie wants him to shave it off. He says he's grown accustomed to it and has been told it makes him look like Thomas Dewey. To the younger audience, this reference means nothing and I would imagine some of the older folks have forgotton. Thomas Dewey was the Presidential candidate for the GOP who was supposedly a "shoo-in" for the 1948 election against Harry Truman. As history records, Truman soundly trounced him. The Chicago Tribune had even gotten out a advanced edition which proclaims Dewey as a winner. This is the copy Truman is shown holding in the famous photo. Prior to that, Dewey had also been a crime busting attorney general for the state of New York, and was the inspiration for the radio show "Gangbusters." The resemblance of Jack Dodson and Dewy was good enough that he could have played the part on a TV documentary.

I remember that episode. That was the one where they were on the train on the way to West Virginia. Howard thought he looked like Tom Dewey because of the mustache, but Millie thought he looked like one of the Keystone CopsLOL.
