The guy does not fit the network late night TV talk show format. The show he wants to do and had been doing is witty political commentary but what the network wants is viral material like carpool karaoke and the multiple things Jimmy Kimmel incorporates into his show like the Matt Damon feud. It's just not in him to do less political and more funny viral. He should have stayed with Comedy Central and John Oliver should have been given the Daily Show. Those two would have been great back to back. It's got to be tough on the guy knowing that he jumped into something he was not right for and even worse to know that he is going to be replaced eventually. The network absolutely wants to move Corden into his slot and it will happen.

GoodI cant stand carpool karaoke. He is more naturally funny than those two hosts combined anyhow, so he was able to crossover. His show still has a very large political element.
Perfect example of what I'm talking about. Here is a person who would be the target audience for the older type of late night network talk show like that of the previous host. Comedy Central has been an excellent source for constant witty political humor where as network late night has become a place where hosts spit out a couple of jokes during a presidential campaign but the bulk of the show is still fluff interviews of stars doing the marketing grind and the new trend of creating Internet viral video. Right now there are those bashing Jimmy Fallon for his recent Donald Trump guest appearance, but why? Why is anyone surprised that Jimmy Fallon did exactly what Jimmy Fallon always does and that is play the adoring fanboy for his guests. It's one thing to expect Matt Lauer to show some kind of semblance of a backbone when it comes to a politician like Trump and bash the guy for dropping the ball, but no way anyone should have expected it from Jimmy Fallon. You would definitely expect it from the Report. You could imagine Trump sitting at a table and after being introduced Steven runs out in front soaking up the applause, but that is not late night network programming and he should have considered the difference in audiences. -

At the end of the day, you can't get overly mathematical. Colbert is naturally funny, period. His show works. Ratings reflect that. Im also in the target market of the 'younger' crowds, but I don't like watching silly games and fake laughter. Natural wit is where it's at.

The show and Colbert are awful. The show is simply unwatchable with Colbert on it. You can't be a one sided political hack and think that is going to fly on a Comedy Show. Nobody I know who watched Letterman or Leno watches Colbert because he is just not funny and has that lecture the viewer vibe. Yes, Letterman got way too political after 9-11, his kid was born but he still put on a good show and was still pretty funny.
