While stationed at Pearl Harbor in the Navy in the early 1980's, there was a rare performance of Hello Dolly in Honolulu. We went to a Saturday afternoon matinee; and they couldn't sell many seats. So they donated them to the Salvation Army who scrambled to find people to come see for free. Friends of our called and gave us mid-auditorium seats, but because (unfortunately) it was such an empty show, at intermission, we snuck down to the front row, and watched the last half of this great classic musical from close up. Carol Channing was AMAZING! Best free tickets we ever got, and would have absolutely been worth the price if we'd paid for them. I discovered recently in my Magnum P.I. DVD set an episode with her in it. After looking it up, I figured out she must have been given the walk-on role in Magnum because she was already in Honolulu for "Hello Dolly." I'd be curious if anyone knows factually about that back story.
