Mostly that's what he really looks like, casually at home, without the tanner and man-makeup. Or as Gerry says "it's all grooming". I love that he can be very self-effacing and humble, aside from all the other crap (women/commitment).

I think what annoys people about Butler and his gf is the all PDA's, the papped photos (hey I used to think Paps were instrusive but I learned from two publicists that I know that's not the case 95% of the time- it's his handlers or her calling the paps. how else would they know where he/she are at? at that precise moment?)the manipulation of the media for his /her's own selfish reasons whatever they might be then suddenly he's manning up protecting the woman he dearly loves from the prying/instrusive/annoying eyes of the silly stupid media! You can't have it both ways.
Did see the pic of him and the dog owner. I do like it when I see the gray/white flecks in his beard. He's terribly handsome then to me. Maybe Butler needs to find out who he is before he can love someone
At work, no one knows who he is and if they do its that guy from 300- how long ago was that? Only JJ covers him and lately they've laid off him. If your work speaks for itself, you don't need this PR crap. Hollywood can eat you up and spit you out before you can say your name

EDIT- Yep Keanu has had a diversified career he takes chances which I like- did see The Gift/ will never see Knock Knock/my folks and I thought he and James Spader were pretty good in The Watcher but the studio messed that up. I thoroughly enjoy John Wick!

Leo loves and leaves them as it were and has been offscreen for nearly a year and there's no real photos about of him. I follow him on twitter and he always tweets about the environment/thinks that matter and when he met the Holy See.
I don't do Twitter, but if I did, I'd probably follow Leo. He's always been one of my favorites, and beyond his acting and films, I share a lot of his social and political views and respect him for those. He seems extremely intelligent to me, and a nice guy in general. I still remember the first time I discovered him when I had to go see his Romeo & Juliet in the theater for a Shakespeare class I was taking in college to finish out my teaching certification. Instant love! LOL! Then Titanic came along and I just thought he was the best thing.5b4 I watched all of his early work and knew he'd be a huge star. He just had that "thing" that some of them have.

Me too. I've seen much of his work ( probably more than Renner/Butler/Cumberbatch actors whose work I like to varying degrees)(but Hardy has my cinematic heart)

Glad to see people are watching TABOO. Shows that a big film actor like Hardy doesn't mind doing TV on FX. but then edgy is Tom's middle name.
What does anybody think of Butler in a project like that?
Haven't seen him in anything period/ historical since 300 which was his biggest hit. Gerry had that 'timeless' quality at that time which Tom seems to always have. -

I haven't watched Taboo, but I think if Butler can figure out how to tap into whatever it is that Hardy has tapped into, it couldn't hurt. I'm just not sure it's in him. He and Hardy are very different in their approaches to their careers, it seems. Gerry seems to have chosen acting as a vehicle t16d0o become a celebrity, whereas Tom seems to have acting as the goal with celebrity being the by-product.
It makes a difference. -

I think Gerry only feels vindicated by his big movies which is sad, it's all the reaction and criticism that drives him in making choices. He must be scared.
He got flogged for Machine Gun Preacher - in racial terms he didn't expect because it was a bio on a real man who felt called by God to protect African children. But it was "white man saves Africa" stereotype that boomeranged hard. Odd he got it again by association with Gods of Egypt - fortunately he wasn't producing and didn't control casting and had secondary role to the YA hero/heroine vehicle. But still bizarre.
Coriolanus didn't get hacked, I mean it is Shakespeare, but there was no crowd of people or critics or fans going we want "more more more" arty films from you Gerry. He got injured on that and must have felt it wasn't worth it. I remember after his 2 artier outings in his next mag interview he said something like I went artistic but "nobody saw them" (he's correct, but you have to expect that when you're trying small alternative films and live with it) so next up, he reverted to his action/thriller genes (Olympus) hoping to re-hook the audience ignoring him.
Guess it's how you look at it - either he's too thin-skinned and cares too much about attention, viewers appreciating him, and box office. Or is he smart to be worried that if he doesn't keep his box office cred, nobody will want him for anything once he can no longer headline a movie. Once you break in, all your "people" worry about is your "career longevity"
Gerry must be testing the waters with Headhunter Calling, seeing if he can get applause outside the sweet spot, but that still hasn't happened yet. Unlike Matt McCon, who I never would have believed could reverse his career from shirtless "Surfer Dude" or man-child RomComs - Gerry is still trying to get that gritty role that expands him to art.
Hardy is so tough, he doesn't care. Seems to be having kids create that for him even more. His interviews are all 'just how to be a man, work, support your children, do your job, no applause, a good man is the one you never hear about, he's just does it.'
I could not believe The Drop got so dropped by critics to be called "the puppy in the garbage can movie," (yikes) and his Child 44 was MIA, but Tom was so good in it. He's had big fails. Now Gerry in that position, he would be cut down by it. Tom not.
I wonder when Tom is ever home? because he works so much. He is younger. Gerry might have been doing that rapidity of movies when he was his age. I seem to remember a time when he had a lot of movies going.
Annie tells us about his bad luck with his prodcos - EmmetFurla and now Relativity. I don't think any of Tom's movies have been held up at all? That's the way it USED to be for Gerry too no more! Maybe his name is not as marquee as Tom's, there are only secondary financing options, less solid companies, etc. for Gerry's movies.
Tom is still in the "hot young thing who can do anything" phase like Gerry was, after hits 300/action,war and Ugly Truth/comedy,romance. Gerry has matured past it.
Or is it Bad Luck? Gerry says so. He said he had a director who went crazy and had to be replaced a while back. A drama on every movie, beyond the movie itself, it sounds.
KEEPERS looks good, but he shoots Den of Thieves first - reading the logline, DEN sounds generic to me. Heist movie. Must be a great twist? He's already done a lot of underground moving around of things in unbelievable ways in a movie LawAbidingCitizen. This one is more fact based, like the heist of gov. money actually happened? Trueb68 Story tie-in. Hopefully not MGP fated.
I wish he'd shoot Keepers first, clearly. An unusual dynamic in that. And true story.

I can't speak to Butler's career much pastmmm..I think Law Abiding Citizen was the last film of his I watched in its entirety. I wasn't impressed. And nothing he's done since has interested me. It's not necessarily HIM, he's just not making movies that grab me.
And he's not a good enough actor to compel me to see movies I otherwise wouldn't care about. No actor is, actually. I mentioned Tarzan in another thread. I guess I watched that for Skarsgard, but only because the trailer looked interesting (Christoph Waltz helped persuade me) and I am already a fan of the Tarzan movies and stories. I'm not going to go out and watchwhatever else S5b4karsgard has been in (I have no idea, LOL) just because I lusted him in True Blood and liked him fine in Tarzan. He's a lovely man in real life too, it seems, but that's not enough to get my money or for me to spend hours of my time watching things I don't care about.
Same goes for Tom Hardy, Leo DiCaprio, and all the other actors I have a soft spot for. I don't actually care if I never see Taboo. It looks interesting, and if it shows up on Netflix or Amazon Prime, I'll check it out, but meh. However, I'll be at the theater opening weekend of the next Mad Max.
I don't even know what my point is. LOL.
I see that Tom is sitting at #1 on the IMDb STARmeter once again. He's been either at that top spot or close to it many, many times over the five years since Dark Knight Rises. Naturally, Mad Max and The Revenant would boost him up there during their day, but it's nice to see that Taboo is obviously piquing people's interest in him just as much.
There's just something about Tom that audiences love. I imagine he's the envy of a lot of his peers. He gets the big box office smashes (Rises, Inception, Mad Max) and the quirky, artsy stuff, AND television. He's something else.
I don't know if Gerry is unlucky in his career, but I do think Tom Hardy is lucky. Lucky, hard-working, driven, and very, very talented. -

Oh, so you've never even SEEN Gerry's arty 'I can act' movies? Then it would be hard for you to dismiss him as a bad actor or not good enough one to bother with, without seeing those films that aren't all pulpy or goofy on purpose.
But too many people didn't care enough to bother either. They like Gerry in pulpy/goofy
No "Chasing Mavericks" either? He was good. Movie was worth seeing.
But if you don't like Gerry's acting, there's no point at all in you going to see his movies - unless he gets a hit like LAC again. And you won't bother with Taboo? It's free on FX. It is very dark, and bit slow, but Tom fills the space well. Even Tom can't get your attention?! You're a tough sell Sirius.
I do care enough to watch. I studied acting and I'm a film lover, writer, etc. So I'm very interested in all the acting and directing and movies going - or not going.
Perfect world, I'd be going to see everything, but about now, that's tough and I am trying to1c84 focus energy on my artwork.
I was hoping I could find people on here who love actors and the craft. Bit saddened because I love talking about the actors with people who know all their work and can compare it and appreciate.
Mad Max is a great series (childhood soft spot for Road Warrior), but you probably loved it with Gibson too? Even if it wasn't Tom, if you're a Mad Max fan you'd still go because it's a cool concept and well-done. So the actor would not matter for you. It could be unknowns and you'd buy ticket. Still be cool - maybe cooler, who knows?! It's a big franchise. Not about the acting. It was just +++ because the Acting was beyond with Tom and Charlize and got us acting-lovers in there.
Annie's favorite Tom Hardy movie is "Locke" It was really small, so I'm guessing you'll never bother to see it. After Mad Max, you'll be disappointed, it is "small movie, huge acting."
I think you're missing out on all the best there is for Tom and Gerry and many others. But I'm an artist at heart who loves acting, so I have different motivation.

LOL. Had to laugh when I read this, as gretchen has followed Gerry's career for a very long time, like some of the rest of us. We have seen the potential, but it has been forever since he has shown it. I doubt he can escape his action 5b4hero, macho man persona at this point. He was excellent in 'Coriolanus', for example. Instead of pouting about its limited success, he should have tried again.
I'm also chuckling that she is accused of not caring about good actors. She has probably posted most about other actors and their choice roles here than anyone else, except possibly Robin. The problem with having those discussions now on this forum and other Butler boards, is that he has lost most of his fans from the days of his good movie efforts. No one is that interested in him anymore. -

couldn't agree more. and therein lies the difference between Butler and the likes of Hardy who had a not so good experience on This Means War but is willing to try doing another romcom !
Crowe doesn't do cute and cuddly well but in the right setting he can be a very good romantic lead.

I'm the opposite - I totally bother. Because I love movies and actors. I have to see as many performances as possible to say I follow their career. Watching Taboo now and I saw Warrior, moonshine movie, Dark Knight, Fury Road, The Drop, and Legend in theater. Had to DVD for Child 44 and Bronson and TinkerTailorSS and Inception. Taped his British TV series and Stuart. I don't like to miss anything.
Going to movies is expensive now, in money and
time. So I get why if people don't go. Even Redbox/subscriptions add up. But seeing all the lesser and greater work of an actor is fun, at least for me.
Most exciting next which should get me off my ass into theater, is new King Arthur movie with Charlie Hunnum. There's an interesting actor. No idea what the movie will be like. But I've got to see how Charlie does.

I've seen plenty of movies with plenty of actors. It's not really a hobby of mine though, and I get the feeling it is for you. I love movies, I love good acting, and I enjoy them both when I run across them. I guess I just have other things that distract me from seeing EVERY movie that Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy, etc. has made. I don't operate that way. I see a movie that looks interesting, I watch it. If an actor in that movie catches my attention (Tom in Dark Knight Rises), I Google him and see what's up. Seriously, I have had done this for:- Gerard Butler
- Gary Oldman
- Jason Isaacs
- Rufus Sewell (where my username came from, actually)
- Tom Hardy
- Michael Fassbender
- Rory McCann
- Cillian Murphey
- Adam Driver
- Alexander Skarsgard
ETA: 11. Stephen Dillane (can't believe I forgot him!)
And I'm assuming number 12 is going to pop up soon when I decide to watch some movie or TV show and discover another lovely actor to be infatuated for a bit. Possibly one I already know, but just haven't experienced in the right role yet to catch my attention.
I will say, Gerard Butler stands alone on the above list as the only actor I've been interested in that I no longer really like that much. I actually dislike him as an actor, and avoid his movies partly because he is in them. There is just something about him that rubs me the wrong way, and I have no idea why that is. He is literally the ONLY actor I feel that way about. I may not make a point to "follow" the other fellas up there, but I still enjoy their movies and their acting. I cannot say the same about Gerry. Very bizarre.
And beyond the above list, I could string out an endless list of actors and actresses I admire. More actors because, well, I find talent sexy (Gary Oldman's quote) so I'm more inclined to follow the men than the ladies.
Maybe there are just too many wonderful actors out there for me to limit my focus to a few. I don't have time to watch EVERY movie of EVERY actor I admire. I'd literally do nothing else.
BUT, more power to those who have that level of passion and devotion to certain actors that they can devote that kind of time to watching all of their work. Nothing wrong111c with that. But don't discount others' opinions just because they don't have that same depth of devotion to watching movies. I may not have watched every single piece of Tom Hardy's work at this point, but I still admire him and feel I can speak intelligently about his career and talent.

I don't have time to respond as much as I'd like to this (feeding horses, getting ready for work - first day of a new semester and partially ready as I missed my teacher workday yesterday due to a busted main water line). Let me just assure you that I love actors and acting. I've seen Gerry in: Beowulf and Grendel, The Jury, Please, Dear Frankie, The Cherry Orchard, Mrs. Brown, One Last Kiss, and others. So I think I'm qualified to speak to his "artsy" work.
As for Tomthe only reason I haven't seen more of his work is because I don't have the opportunity. I don't have cable or satellite TV so I watch everything online via Netflix and Amazon Prime. So I've missed out on things I do want to see, namely Locke. I've watched him in Peaky Blinders, I own Bronson and love it, and I'm eager to see more of his highly-acclaimed work. Tom IS the reason I went to see Mad Max, I suppose. I wasn't really that big of a fan of the Gibson movies. And he's the reason I went BACK to see Dark Knight Rises a second time in the theater (though I was already a Dark Knight/Batman fan).
I go to the theater rarely. Our local Carmike just closed its doors and is being reopened as some other brand of cinema. The next closest is an hour drive from my house.
Anyway, after work, if I have the energy (LOL) I'll be glad to get into more of this. I actually love discussing actors. -

You have HORSES!!! Enough said. I know I wouldn't see as many movies - I love horses! Drawing and painting them. Follow TW and IG horse accounts and RT horse pics. You ever have a Foal? So cute. The long curved legs haven't grown into yet.

You've seen a lot Gerry! I also did the Desert short by Ariel Vromen, UK low budgets Fast Food and one he plays gangster, and Jury series which is actually good.
I was just surprised - LAC seems long time ago. But if Gerry acting annoys you now in later career I can see why you'd avoid it.
Only exception I'd say is Chasing Mavericks - he was different, no macho ticks as in MGP, Cor, Olympus and his other warrior works - Frosty Hesson was understated quiet internal sort of man married with kids, very normal except he surfs big waves but he's quiet about that too - not like the bombastic warrior type Gerry usually cast in. I sat there thinking how changed Gerry was in it out of the warrior mold stereotype. To me, CMav was the only satisfying movie of those 3 small dramas - despite good performances in MGP and Cor.
Love your list idea! Great reply. Been working on my own lists. Hoping find more time to post. My brother is here so I'm distracted and stressed. Also I got out to see Split - James McAvoy in Lead Role! Carries movie. Does much of acting with his eyes - physical role but I love the "eye work." Hope it opens doors for James as a lead.
ATONEMENT - seen several times since - though I know the story and it's sad, it always gets me and I watch it to the end.
I was movie kid; bit of an addict really. Probably not a hobby more like a passion.
You get to have passion for horses! Reminds me of my year of riding lessons I loved when I was 13. But my woman teacher was so mean. She wanted to see me get hurt. And I don't even think she liked her horse! It was her meal ticket, way to make money. But a horse person loves their horse. She'd be a great villain for me to write. Now I'm adult I think of her being a "damaged person". Like the great character James McAvoy plays has DID - identity disorder or multiple personalities. Hope people see it. They sell it as thriller horror but it's all suspense and acting directed by M. Night (Sixth Sense).
Just a little blood at very end.

Actors whose work I've seen
Hardy- I much prefer him. Locke well done, beauty in its simplicity. If he's reading the phone book, I'm so there!
the others in no particular order/to varying degrees
Crowe he'll always be Maximus but his portrayal of whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand runs a close second. Kill the Messenger should have been this generation's The Insider. Can't stand Wahlberg but suffered thru that awful Broken City and I'll stomach the revamping of The Mummy with Cruise as Crowe's co-star. Cinderella Man/A Beautiful Mind/Sum of Us/LA Confidential/Heaven's Burning among others he has done. A lot of great/good/solid work
Liam Neeson- Of all his work I've seen The Grey stands out alongside Schindler's List. He speaks naturally regardless of the role and no one really comments on it unlike Butler. I read somewhere he has a slight speech impediment perhaps that is why he cannot do a convincing American accent. Next up for me Silence
Leo- from Blood Diamonds to J Edgar to Wolf of Wall Street to The Beach to The Revenant- I'll be there seeing what he does. I gravitate towards films such as The Grey/The Revenant. I knew of Leo and Crowe because of my mom and I miss watching their films with her.
Keanu Reeves- any actor who convincingly portrays a football player (Point Break/The Replacements) has a soft place as I was born a football fan! I like him best in Hardball. I'll never see Knock Knock- the subject makes me uncomfortable but looking forward to Replicas and To the Bone- he's a man after my own cinematic heart
Jeremy Renner- he hasn't really done a role that I'll remember. I've seen a pretty fair amount of his work and its just there. Messenger should have been a signature role for him and it was okay. Too much drama in his personal life/failure of Focus to promote it. But I applaud him for trying his first time producing. Can't stand Hurt Locker or The Town. I enjoy him as Hawkeye and yes as Aaron Cross in Bourne Legacy
Benedict Cumberbatch- only seen a limited number of his films but thought he was very good as Alan Turing and was prefectly cast as the arrogant surgeon Dr Strange
Daniel Bruhl- Niki Lauda in Rush. Enough said
and the fellow who began this Gerard Butler I have said many times I'm on the late freight with him. I do like him in Dear Frankie and Johnny Donne in The Jury. I've said before I'd have liked Special Agent Mike Banning to save me and feel he's most like Mike Chadway. The Ugly Truth along with Playing for Keeps are the only 2 romcoms of his I have seen. PS I love You is terribly maudlin and after 2 painful minutes of watching, my eyes hurt. Hehe!! No chemistry between the leads and thank God my Spurs were playing that night!
Coriolanus and MGP & LAC (effective as a man undone by a legal system that failed him. And like Man on Fire I hated the ending- Foxx should have expired not Butler!) demonstrated he could convey a dramatic arc and master Shakepeare which is pretty tough to do. Chasing Mavericks was on one Saturday last Autumn so I couldn't watch much more than 5-10 minutes as I was on my way to seeing my alma mater UCLA play a football game at the Rose Bowl
Perhaps Keepers will garner for him what he wants so very much- well received critically/successful box office and maybe even an award or two

Hahayeah, I got my first horse almost 30 years ago, and I haven't been horseless since! Unfortunately, for various reasons, I don't ride as much as I used to, but I have three of them, two retirees (28 and 20 years old) and my "youngster" who is 9 this year. I've owned the 20-year old since he was bornactually watched him being foaled. He's the sweetest thing on hooves, a big, beautiful boy. I've owned the 28-year old since he was 6 years old. It's a life-long relationship, they are family. Both of those horses have extensive show records and I had a blast competing with them back in the day. The younger horse came along when I was already into my teaching career and living on my own here at my own little farm. We showed some, but I never had the time and energy (and money!) to devote to it quite like I did with the other two. But I have the land and facility and means to give them good lives for as long as they live, so they get to stay here. They're a lot of work, especially as they age and it takes more to keep them healthy and happy, but they're worth it. Over the years I've owned a lot of horses, but these three are my "home boys" that will hopefully never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.
James McAvoy made me swoon in Becoming Jane. OMG, when she doesn't think he's at the party, and she's dancing with that one (boring) guy and all of a sudden she does a turn in the dance and there he is with that sly smirk. Squee! Makes my heart go pitter-pat every time I watch it! Hee hee!
