In general I am just fed up with the obsession about actresses not looking their age. It's not just reserved for women in their 40s or older. Young actresses deal with it too. Male actors too.
For women esp there is this expectation that they must be attractive enough to make you as a viewer want to do things to yourself while watching them which is just ridiculous.

Yes. I agree totally. Another aspect related to your points a little bit, and I've heard actresses speak about it (And by the way, I use "actress" for convenience. Some women do not like the distinction and prefer "actor") but there is also the practice of pairing an older leading man with a much younger leading woman. I'll accept that some older male actors look great for their age, but for men in their 50s, to have their character romantically involved with a much younger female character, it's simply not realistic. Sure, there are all kinds of age differences in relationships, but it seems that male actors do not want to be paired up with female actors in the same age group, lest it make the male actor LOOK OLD! Basically, as an article I read some time ago put it, "leading men age, but their love interests do not".
You will find this trend in many, many films featuring Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, and especially Richard Gere.
Again, this isn't always the case, but it happens a great deal, and I imagine it's all about the male egoof the male actors AS WELL AS the male audience, who will live vicariously through the character they are watching on screen.
