If you've never seen Patti perform live, you should sell your hair and teeth to see her! If you've seen her before, then see her again. I saw her and the band play Glastonbury in 1999 and it was just about (on a par with seeing 'Fugazi') the greatest performance I've ever seen. Thrilling beyond belief.

God, lucky you! Yes, she's hugely talented and sexy as hell.
Imagine a USA in which women modeled themselves more after the Patti Smiths and less after the Paris Hiltons. It would be a more intelligent country, a more exciting country and a sexier country too. In a USA like that, the only way that charlatan, that joker, Dubya would get into the White House would be if he paid to go on one of those tours.
End of sermon. -

Dear Carruthers Brothers (are there more than one of you?)
Just wondering, since you say you saw her at Glastonbury - do you live across the Pond? If so did you see her at the Meltdown Festival in June? I'm an ex-pat (Scottish) myself. Count myself very lucky to live in New York now so I get to see her a lot, but I would love to hear about her performance at Meltdown. Cheers, Jo-Jo. -

No, sadly I didn't get to see her at Meltdown (Grrrrrrrrrrrr! Gnashing of teeth! Banging of head against brick wall!). I had to just read the great reviews of her performance of "Horses&qu16d0ot; and curse myself for not having a ticket. Check out the September issues of 'Mojo' and 'Uncut' because they both have pieces on the "Horses" Meltdown gig and they also have two different articles of Patti talking about Bob Dylan. The little piece in 'Mojo' is of her talking about 'Changing Of The Guard', the much bigger piece in 'Uncut' is of her talking about "Like A Rolling Stone".
Yes, I am over the other side of the water. Currently, I'm stuck at my boring job, looking out the window, on a very sunny day. D'OH!
Come back over here soon, Patti! The fight against mediocrity never ends and you are needed on the front line.

I'm also from the NYC area, and never miss Patti when she plays. We've probably been to a lot of the same shows. I see her every year for her birthday and New Years Eve shows at the Bowery Ballroom. Plus what ever shows she does in around the city. I always loved the pre-birthday/Bowery warmup shows that she would do at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park. I recognize so many people from her showspeople I've never talked tobut their faces are etched in my mind just from being at shows. I wonder if we've ever crossed paths.

Not sure yet. "Horses" in its entirety is very tempting. I've seen her play every song off the album at one time or another, but for some reason I haven't rushed to get tickets to this. If it's sold out, there's always the chance that I may decide to try and get a ticket off the street (probably very expensively) at the last minute.
I'm first going to try and get into the Garden to see her open for U2 on Nov 21 and 22. I have a weird feeling she's gonna do a "Horses" warm up at the Garden. Maybe I'm wrong, but there's always that chance. She's facing a different and larger audience those two nights, and I personally think she'll be on fire. She often gets too comfortable in front of her own crowds and many times goes through the motions, which will add to the incentive for her to really kick ass in front of the U2 audience (although many people probably like her anyway). If I don't get into the U2 shows, I may go to the BAM shows (or at least one of them). -

Good luck getting the U2 tickets! I don't think I could afford one, and for me it would be a waste of money because I would probably just see Patti then come home - I'm kinda sick of Bono and his big mouth. That that lot got into the Hall Of Fame ahead of Patti SUCKS. At least Larry had the courtesy to acknowledge that they "jumped the queue"!

Please! Don't get me started on the Hall of Fame. It's a f_cking CRIME that she's not there yet. I've cursed them every year since she's been eligible.
Anyway, I've never seen U2, and I've blown them off every time they play. I like them, but don't love them. I've been meaning to catch them since the 91 tour (got into them between Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby) Again, I was going to blow them off until I heard Patti was playing. It's worth a try. If I don't get in, I go downtown, spend a night in the village, and drive home. I'm sure she's going to announce her Bowery Ballroom shows soon anyway. I could just add my U2 money to my Bowery fund. (I knowI'm patheticI'm like a Deadhead when it comes to Patti). -

No you're not pathetic at all. Every time the Hall Of Fame inductees are announced and she is not one of them, my husband laughs his arse off for several hours and says, "See, I keep telling you Jo, you are the only person in the universe who likes her." Well, I suspected maybe two or three other people did too! I think Chrissie Hynde getting in last year just took the cake though - where do you believe her inspiration came from?!

NO!!!! Why on earth would I want him to spoil it for me?! Anyway we have four kids so he gets to be Mommy Seahorse for a change when I go to the Patti shows. No I haven't met her yet, but I'm a firm believer in dreams coming true! I did meet someone else I liked and no-one believed me because they lived in a different country, but I still did! Sorry, getting off the subject. At the Bowery Ballroom a few years ago Patti was giving out the peace sign pins and she came right over to me and gave me one - that's the closest I came to her so far! If you were there that night (I think it was 2002) you will recall her backpack that she had the pins in was tartan, and I took that to be a good sign because I'm Scottish. (Then again, these punk types seem to have a love affair with tartan - I'm sure you've seen the clothing boutiques in the East Village!)

That's hysterical. I'm sure we can share so many Patti stories like that. Yes I was there. I still have the peace pin. In fact, I also have a Stone Pony Christmas ball from the Asbury Park show the night before. She also brought the leftovers to the Bowery Ballroom the next night. That was the best year as far as I'm concerned. I was too young to catch Patti in the 70s, so I've only been seeing her since Central Park in 1993. The 2002 Bowery shows were the best and most inspired shows I've seen her do. I remember the whole club was mic'd up because they were supposedly recording a live album that never came out. I remember specifically PERFECT versions of "Frederic", "Glitter in Their Eyes", "Redondo Beach" and "Free Money"better than I've ever heard her do them. I remember she opened one show with "The Ballad of Pirate Jenny" from Three Penny Opera. I also remember the war hadn't yet started, but there was going to be a giant protest the next month, and she was plugging it all three nights. There was the "Mr. Weapon's InspectorInspect this, mother f_cker!" rap in the middle of "Rock and Roll N_gger" every night during the encores. The next night was New Years Eve. She opened I think with a reading from Allen Ginsberg. I saw her do "When Duty Calls" for the first time that night, and then she went right into a very intense "Birdland". 2002 into 2003!!! Hell yes, I remember those showsI'm still shaken by them. She hasn't been that good since.
So who was it that you met? I'm always interested in hearing things like this. -
JoJoSeahorse — 20 years ago(November 11, 2005 02:45 PM)
Maybe you can answer a question for me? I think it was last year, or maybe the year before, (I always go to the birthday show), someone in the audience had shouted out something rude, and Patti got "annoyed" in that way that she does, and then she asked if anyone had been there the night before, and remembered how someone had spoiled her "prettiest song"! I've always wondered what had happened! Where you there and do you remember? I think you would make fun of me if you knew who I met, but if you really want to know.

I don't remember that particular incident, although I've seen many like it. There was the birthday show in 2001 when someone threw a wrapped present on stage and she freaked out by saying: "Don't throw no f_ckin sh_t up here man! I've got enough of sh_t! I have everything I need!!" I remember someone screaming out something stupid like "Keep the fire burning Patti!" And she yelled back "You too man!" I remember at the Stone Pony in 2002, (the night before she gave out the peace pins), some girl kept talking through the show. As Patti was introducing "Because the Night", the girl kept talking. I screamed out at the top of my lungs "Tell her to shut the f_ck up, Patti!" It seemed like Patti ignored me because they started playing "Because the Night" right after I said it. Just then, Patti began singing"Take me now baby here as I am, shut the f_ck up, try and understand." Needless to say, the crowd laughed.
No, I wont make fun of you. Who did you meet? You can PM me if it's embarrasing and you don't want the rest of the board to see.
