I'm not particularly familiar with Ozzy or Black Sabath, (even though I attended an Ozzy Osbourne concert!) Was he still with Black Sabath at the time, or was he doing his solo career? Do/did you notice much of a difference between him singing with Black Sabath compared to when he sang on his own?
I was thinking of bands' lead singers leaving the band and going separately on their own way, (or those who were solo or in different bands, getting tapped to replace the lead)? I was thinking of David Lee Roth who I still regard as one of the best frontmen when it came to bands. I don't know if he left thinking that Van Halen would be lost without him and perhaps (I'm just guessing here) assuming that the frontman usually manages to represent the whole band in most cases due to their voices and how powerful their stage presence was. If I recall correctly, He didn't fare that well on his own.
Other examples I think of are Beyonce leaving Destiny's Child, Paul Simon, Tina Turner (bless her heart, she was the soul of Ike & Tina et al), Michael Jackson leaving the Jackson Five, Sting leaving the Police, Annie Lennox, Marilyn Manson (from his origin as lead in Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids), Lou Reed leaving the Velvet Underground, Harry Styles leaving One Direction, Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac…etc. I'm sure there are many more that I haven't thought about.
I know that the frontman is generally considered the
core
of any band, but I've also noticed so many lead singers leave, and it turns out, their solo work wasn't
really
that great (despite them having the most recognized voice).

You can add Sting, Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel to that list of artists who left a band to pursue to a successful solo career. I had a chance to see Peter Gabriel a few years ago, but no one wanted to go with me…tickets were $$$.
I'd say Ozzy's solo stuff was similar to Black Sabbath in a way. I loved when Ronnie James Dio sang lead vocals for BS. He had a pretty successful solo career as well.
*just noticed that you mentioned Sting. I really shouldn't be drinking coffee!
Annie Lennox is one of my favorite artists ever! Love everything about her. I was lucky enough to see the Eurythmics live in 1989. What a great show they put on.
