remains one of the best movies I have ever seen.
Now, I understand the SEINFELD jokes about THE ENGLISH PATIENT its pacing is a bit of a problem, even for me. But Minghella really was an artist.
And dead, unexpectedly, at only age 54.
We were robbed.

I was blessed to have met Mr. Minghella by chance, and later to interview him for the now defunct website, Reel.com.
I interviewed him during the editing process on Ripley - got to watch some of that happen (Spoiler - there was a version of th238e very end of the film I preferred to what you see in the finished product)
Physically, he was Italian all the way - Olive skin and warm brown eyes - to speak to him, he was quite British, had a lovely, melodious speaking voice and quite a proper accent. Truly, he had a voice that one could happily listen to for hours on end. I would be dishonest not to say I quickly became somewhat infatuated with the man - he was that real and that charming.
You are so right.. The film community and those who enjoy really well made films were robbed by hisb68 early passing.
If for any reason you have not yet seen Truly, Madly, Deeply - make an effort to see it. Minghella's whole heart was on display in that early directorial effort, and it's why I loved him before he ever became internationally known or acclaimed. -

In a sweet follow up to that, though the original article vanished along with the company that purchased the website, I still have the original transcript complete w2000ith Anthony's hand written notes where he speaks of growing up on the Isle of Wight, feeling very much the outsider looking in from his humble background, and how that informed his writing for the character of Ripley Shame the full interview is essentially gone as we went quite in depth on a number of subjects, all of which colored his view as a film maker. Not sure I own the rights or I'd find a venue to re-publish for the benefit of fans and up and coming film makers He was a writer and film maker motivated by the very highest of motivations A rare creature from my experience.
