I've never met him, nor any other major film actors or directors, that I can think of, but as much as I love movies and his are some of my favorites, I'd love the chance to meet him and have dinner, a drink, etc.
I'm not surprised to hear he's that warm of a guy and so willing to talk, offer bit parts in his movies (look at the credits in any of them and each bit part has a story behind itlisten to his commentary if it exists, for details), and is just a mensch ("ethnic jargon" he loves so much!).
To those who condemn Marshall's movies in other threads on this board, I can only say, you're certainly entitled to your own opinion, but if you want to be a good critic, then understand that the essence of the word is to highlight and differentiate nuances of something. PROVE why you don't like something or why you do.
I happen to think he's a phenomenal director who will be remembered and studied for as long as film and tv directors are studied. Yes, his films are generally on the soft, slice of life, and happy side, but that's his choice and our gift to savor. I love drama and suspense, but I'll take a Beaches, Princess Diaries, or Pretty Woman any day of the week. Throw in an appetizer of some episodes of Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley and I'm in heaven!!
I love you Garry Marshall. Thank you for all of the incredible moments and memories you've provided. Rejoice over the contribution you've made to the world with messages, images, and sounds of such beauty.
Between you and your sister, you've helped educate and inspire a generation, and many more to come. Ignore the cynics. They're held hostage within theircrust!
I hope you continue to work until, as George Bernard Shaw says in my favorite quote, you're "thoroughly used up".
Thanks for it all,
Stu Needel
