Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Jamie Kennedy

And I understand how he could be pissed at people trashing him all the time, but that's life in Hollywood. The one thing that bothered me was when Eli Roth was talking about how Saw was tested and a girl thought it was just gory and not scary and he called her a fat girl and basically said that she didn't know what she was talking about. What do her looks have to do with her opinion, first of all? Second, I love horror movies and I think the laziest thing you can do in a "scary" movie is to try to shock the audience with gore and that is exactly what the Saw movies do. Eli Roth is overrated, Jamie Kennedy was great in the Scream movies, he not gonna win an oscar doing what he normally does, but no reason to hate him.

Okay, get ready for a really long opinion meant in no way to offend anyone.
Heckler was a very well made documentary on how creative people deal with the constant bashing and insults from people claiming to be critics or admittedly calling themselves hecklers. I'll admit, there was a point where I thought Jamie was just being whiny but he fully admits this in the end. After 5b4seeing what he goes through you can understand how someone can become depressed by this. I understand his need to confront these people but the problem there is now these people are immortalized on film. Most of us agree these 'critics' have no idea what it takes to get up in front of a room full of people and perform. None of them knows what it takes to make a multi-million dollar movie. And none of them know what it feels like to be bashed for sharing what they love and have it ripped apart right in front of them.
When Eli was ranting I can understand the frustration he might feel. It builds and sooner or later it comes out, calling the girl fat was uncalled for but most of the things people say about him are too. Two wrongs don't make a right but frustration builds, especially when you hear the same things everyday. Do I think his films or the Saw films are scary? They were thrilling, and all in all they were pretty entertaining. I loved the end of Hostel which only pissed me off at the beginning of part 2 but was pleased once again with the ending. The first Saw did have scare value, how scary is it to know the only way to save your family is to kill this guy locked in a room with you and top that by cutting off your own foot? Scary is a point of view, but I don't think you can argue that Hostel or Saw are not horror movies. Horrible things happen in them. And most people won't bring up these points. Why wasn't it scary? 16d0Because it sucked? No, because people went into a horror movie expecting to see ghosts or zombies, maybe. Human beings can be scarier then any monster someone can create. The situation in Hostel was scary, if you were in the character's shoes, would you not pee your pants? And now I will go on to say, I watched both Hostel movies once each and have no desire to see them again. Not because they are bad, I just don't like the idea of torture and the idea that people could be sick enough to do this to others. scares the crap out of me.
Quite honestly I felt worse for the comics. Why, free or not, would you go into a comedy show and have the nerve to be offended? What does it matter what the comic looks like? And if you don't like the show, why not just leave? It is a bit deceiving when you hear comics like Lewis Black or Dave Attell, you think these guys must be bullet proof. But comics perform an act, in their own right they are actors. They go up there to entertain and even if there is a hint of truth to their act, why add to it? A comic will admit their flaws for the sake of laughing with someone about it, no one likes to be laughed at. I was unnerved when Dave Attell spoke about that guy who hated his act because he was ugly. Or the reviewer that bashed Harland Williams over the way he looks. That's like if you were hanging from a cliff and you were about to fall, you wouldn't take the rescuer's hand because he had a big nose. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. And that clip where the audience was throwing trash at Jamie, was that a glass flask that hit him? How crazy do you have to be to want to hurt someone because you don't think they're funny? Just. Leave.
Back to Jamie he proved his point in the film. There's a fine line between a critic and a heckler. Personally attacking a performer or director/author is not being a critic. Everyone wants to feel important I suppose, bashing someone seems to make some people feel special. Yeah, you're special but not the good kinda special. He started out, depressed and whiny and by the end I think he learned. He turned the tables I think, maybe these critics are bashing him but at least he's worth bashing. To his fans, he's funny and talented, his biggest flaw is letting his insecurity take him over to the point of actually making a documentary about it. But it wasn't pointless, if you learn from anything you do then it's never pointless or wrong. It may suck for a while but you can be better because of it, whether it be as a person or as a performer. In no way did I find Son of the Mask an oscar winning film. But my kids loved it, my youngest wants to burp bubbles now and everytime it comes on they laugh. He was great in the Scream movies, probably my favorite actor in the films by far except for Matthew Lillard. I remember screaming in the theatre when Randy died in part 2.
Point is, if all your goals in life are to destroy something that someone creates with the best of intentions, whether to teach or entertain then what kinda life are you living? You're not saving anybody time out of their lives, that's for them to decide. And if you do have an opinion th
