San Francisco's public high schools will implement a sweeping change to their grading system this fall, replacing traditional methods with a policy that allows students to pass with scores as low as 41 percent.
The initiative, part of a broader "Grading for Equity" push, is stirring concern among educators, students and parents over academic standards and college readiness.
Similar policies across other Bay Area districts—such as Dublin, Oakland and Pleasanton—have seen mixed results and strong community reactions. Dublin Unified attempted a pilot of equity grading in 2023, which included removing zeros for missed assignments and awarding a minimum of 50 percent for any "reasonably attempted" work.
That pilot, however, was met with outrage and resistance. Parents created petitions, formed WhatsApp groups and filled school board meetings to protest what they saw as a lowering of standards for their children. The Dublin school board eventually suspended the initiative, though individual teachers were still allowed to use the methods at their discretion.
The experiment in San Francisco comes amid — or despite — a broader rethinking of DEI initiatives after the election of Donald Trump, who ran on a platform of excising what he and many others said were "unfair" equity practices in the government and private sectors.
Can you imagine utilizing these tactics for professions like law or medicine? If someone can "pass" with a grade of 41 based on purely subjective interpretation, (ie: where teachers can use their bias to determine what is "reasonably attempted" work), what can we expect from future generations entering the work force? Lowering the standards across the board so we no longer encourage achievement to perfect one's learning, is abysmal. How would you like your next cardiac surgeon to be cutting into you if you knew he "passed" school while getting less than half of the information assimilated, much less perfected? The fact that this even exists demonstrates why America's education system is failing students and encouraging mediocrity. There was a time when academic laziness was addressed and excellence was rewarded. This doesn't benefit anyone.

They have a little something called Summer School for Equality in Texas. If you don't pass, you fail. Period.

We always had the same type of arrangement. I remember some college classes being pass or fail, but most were graded, and they absolutely were not "upgraded" to make sure everyone in the class felt good about their inadequate grades. We earned everything.
I had to go to summer school once to make up for a chemistry class that I failed.

I failed precalculus in the 10th grade and had to attend summer school that year. Advanced math is always something I've struggled with.

I passed my last semester of calculus with a score like that. I think my thermodynamics class was probably similar.

San Francisco used to be such a beautiful place. It's turned into a total dump.
It reminds me of Portland. I briefly lived in Redmond for a short period and visited Portland on the regular. It was gorgeous, especially the markets. The floating bridge freaked me out a little, but other than that, it was very nice. I wouldn't step foot in Portland again either.
